「➊The Only Constant Is Change」
It’s the same all over. Technology’s always changing, and it takes jobs with it sometimes. Just look at internet shopping. I mean, what about the clerks sitting in empty shops? What are they supposed to do? What about me? Watch this — here comes another customer. Wait for it ... and ➋there you go! One ➌beep, and that’s the end! I’ve still got a job, but for how long?
I’m pretty high tech ➍as my type go, too! I mean, ➎first and foremost, my kind are all basically locked drawers ... with a tray to keep our contents safe and ➏organized. In the old days, we had big, noisy buttons like a typewriter. Even a roll of paper and a bell, too! But we’re built for adding numbers, not telling stories. Everything went from mechanical to electronic a few ➐decades ago, but we still add stuff up. These days, well, I don’t even have buttons — just a touch-screen — but I’ve still got a roll of paper. And now, I can ➑keep track of shop ➒inventory and all kinds of other stuff. But that drawer? That’s where the money is. ➓Literally! You can’t ⓫get rid of that. Right?
Or can you? I mean, with ⓬digital payments on your phone, and ⓭contactless payments, and online payments ... I’ve got more receipts and ⓮credit slips in me than I do actual money! What happens to the world when cash isn’t even used anymore? What happens to me? I suppose I’ll lose my drawer and just be a screen, like every other device today. It sounds like kind of a dull way to live, doesn’t it? Just beep, beep, beep all day long. It’s definitely more fun when I get to open my mouth up wide and say, “Hey! ⓯Show me the money!”

どこでも同じなんです。技術は常に変化していて、時折仕事を道連れにします。インターネット・ショッピングについてちょっと考えてみてください。つまり、がらがらの店に居る店員はどうなるんですか？彼らにどうしろというんですか？僕はどうなります？見ていてください―お客がまた来ました。ちょっと待って・・・ほーらね！1回ピーッと鳴って、それで終わりです！僕にはまだ仕事がありますが、それもいつまででしょうか？
機種としては、僕はかなりのハイテクでもあります！つまり、何よりもまず、僕たちはすべて基本的に鍵が掛かった引き出しで・・・中身を安全に保管して整理しておくトレーが付いています。昔は、タイプライターのような大きくて、うるさい音のするボタンがありました。ロール紙やベルまで付いてね！だけど僕たちは、足し算するように作られているんです、話を伝えるのではなくて。二、三十年前にすべて機械式から電子式に変わりましたが、僕たちはまだ数を合計しています。近頃は、何と、ボタンすらなくなって―タッチスクリーンだけです―ロール紙はまだありますが。そして今や、店の在庫やら何やらを把握できるんです。ですが、あの引き出しですか？そこがお金のある所です。文字どおりにね！あれは、なくせないでしょう。ねえ？
それとも、なくせるって？だって、携帯電話でのデジタル決済や、非接触型決済、オンライン決済のおかげで・・・僕の中にあるのは現金よりもレシートやクレジットカードの利用控えの方が多いんです！現金が使われもしなくなったら世界はどうなるんですか？僕はどうなるんですか？引き出しがなくなってスクリーンだけになるんでしょうね、今のほかのすべてのデバイスと同じように。つまらない生き方に思えませんか？ただ、ピーッ、ピーッ、ピーッって一日中。それよりは、大きく口を開けて「おい！金を見せろ！」って叫ぶ方が絶対に面白いですよ。
