先月、話題になったニュースをピックアップして紹介する、英語音声付きの連載。今回は、日本と同様、開花がとても早かったワシントンD.C.の桜に関するニュースです。

気候の変化に戸惑ったアメリカの桜

今年は日本の桜は例年より早く開花しました。そして、日本だけでなく、アメリカの桜も早咲きだったようです。今回は、約100年前に東京から桜が贈られたワシントンD.C発のニュースを紹介します。

Washington Cherry Blossoms

Anchor: Washington, D.C.’s cherry blossoms are coming out early this year. AP’s Ed Donahue explains.

Reporter: The trees are apparently confused about the changing climate.

Jeff Reinbold (superintendent, National Park Service): Due to the warmer than average temperatures, the trees never reached their winter dormancy, which is the starting point for calculating when the blooms will emerge.

Reporter: Jeff Reinbold, with the National Park Service, says the 3,700 cherry blossom trees in the city are expected to reach peak bloom earlier than expected, between March 22 and 25. The city has experienced dramatic temperature swings. It hit 81 degrees one day last week. Two days later, it snowed.

Reinbold: Our natural resource manager likened the trees this year, our indicator tree, to a teenager. There’s a lot going on there right now.

記者：国立公園局のジェフ・ラインボルドによると、市内3700本の桜は予想より早く、3月22日から25日の間に満開を迎えると予想されています。市内は気温の大きな変化に見舞われてきました。先週は気温が81度に達する日がありました。その2日後には雪が降りました。

ラインボルド：自然資源担当者は、今年の木、つまり（開花の）標本木を10代の若者に例えました。そこは今、いろいろと複雑な状況にあるのです。

記者：ワシントンの桜は1912年に東京市長から贈られたものにさかのぼります。ワシントンのエド・ドナヒューがお伝えしました。
