「A ➊Golden Opportunity」
This is it! My ➋moment! Do you have any idea how long I’ve waited for this? I mean, it’s
so ➌incredibly rare to get a chance to ➍prove yourself like this! ➎Bring it on!
I’ll have help, of course. I can’t do it ➏on my own. I suppose the sad part is that, even if my owner becomes world-famous, no one will even remember me when it’s all over. Maybe my ➐manufacturers will ... But never mind. I don’t ➑compete for praise. I do it for myself! Either way, opportunities like this only come along once every four years, and don’t think I’ll be able to wait for the next chance. Once I get too ➒worn out, my owner will replace me, so this summer is ➓pretty much my last opportunity.
I’m ⓫in great shape, ⓬mind you! I’m built for it. I don’t even need any exercise. I have a long, slender body made of carbon fiber, a grip for my owner’s hand right around my middle and a strong metal tip. And really, I haven’t changed much since I was first invented ⓭thousands and thousands of years ago — ⓮apart from the carbon fiber, of course. The earliest of my ancestors were made of solid wood and were used for hunting and ⓯warfare. Later, when people started ⓰working with metal, they started making our tips out of steel so we would be even more ⓱deadly. That makes our history sound so violent, but somewhere around 2,700 years ago, my ancestors started being used in a sport! They threw us for distance, and sometimes into straw targets. And I’m ready to ⓲go for gold.
Oh! Here comes my owner to carry me out to the field. It looks like it’s time to fly!

いよいよね！私の見せ場よ！この時をどれほど待っていたかわかる？だって、自分の実力を示すこんなチャンスをもらえるのは、信じられないほどまれなのよ！受けて立つわ！
もちろん、助けを借りるの。私一人ではできないからね。悲しいのは、私のご主人が世界的に有名になっても、すべて終わってしまえば、誰も私を覚えてさえいないことよ。もしかしたら、私のメーカーくらいは・・・でも、気にしないわ。称賛されるために競うわけじゃないもの。私自身のためよ！いずれにしろ、こんな機会がやって来るのは4年に一度で、次のチャンスまで私が待てるなんて思わないで。使い古されたら、私はご主人に取り替えられてしまうから、この夏がほぼ最後のチャンスよ。
言っておくけど、体型だってばっちりよ！私はそのために作られているの。運動さえ必要ないわ。私はカーボン・ファイバー製の細長い体をしていて、ちょうど真ん中あたりにご主人の握る所があり、先端は硬い金属製よ。そして実は、はるか昔に発明されてから、あまり変わっていないの―もちろん、カーボン・ファイバーは別だけど。私の最古の祖先は、硬い木でできていて、狩りや戦いに使われていたわ。後になって、人間が金属を扱い始めると、先端を鋼鉄で作るようになったから、私たちはさらに殺傷力が増したのよ。おかげで、私たちの歴史はとても凶暴に思われているけれど、2,700年ほど前に、私の祖先がスポーツに使われだしたのよ！私たちを投げて距離を競ったの。わらの的を使うこともあったわ。さあ、金を狙う準備は万端よ。
ああ！ご主人がフィールドに私を連れ出しに来たわ。今こそ、飛び立つ時のようね！
