「A Formal Affair」
Ha, just look at all these beautiful people, all dressed up. That’s what I like to see. And there’s the happy couple! Don’t they look wonderful? Especially the ❶groom. I see he’s wearing some siblings of ours. Good for him. ➋As far as I’m concerned, I don’t think a man is fully dressed until he’s wearing a pair of us.
My owner is the groom’s ➌best man, so I’m pretty sure that he’s going to make a speech soon. That should give everyone a good chance to look at us. We’re not large, but I believe that good fashion is all in the details. My owner is wearing a fine, three-piece suit this evening, with ➍tasteful ❺pinstripes, and a blue silk tie. Most importantly, he also has a new cotton shirt with a ➏French collar and ➐French cuffs. He’s not the kind of man who wears gold, so he chose us because we’re made of silver. My face is square and ❽set with a simple blue stone — to match his tie, of course. And we each have a slim silver ➒post with a little foot that ➓flips out to keep us from falling out of our buttonholes.
Sadly, we spend most of our time quietly sitting in a little box he keeps in his closet. That’s the trouble with being so formal. We only get to see ⓫fancy ⓬black-tie events, important meetings and, of course, weddings. But wait! The speech is about to begin. Our owner likes to gesture with his hands when he talks, so we’ll be ⓭nice and easy to see, ⓮peeking out from the sleeves of his jacket. Here we go!

おや、こちらのきれいな方々をちょっと見てください、皆さん正装されています。それが、私の好きな眺めなんです。そして幸せなカップルがあそこに！すてきなお二人ですよね？特に花婿が素晴らしい。彼が私たちのきょうだいを身に着けているのが見えますね。やるじゃないですか。言わせてもらうと、男性は、私たちを一組身に着けて、初めて完全な正装に
なると思うんです。
私のご主人は花婿の付添人なので、もうすぐスピーチをするはずだと思います。そうすれば皆さんにとって、私たちを見るいい機会になるでしょう。私たちは大きくありませんが、優れたファッションというものはすべて、細部に宿るのだと思っています。ご主人は今夜、趣味のいいピンストライプの高級な三つぞろいのスーツと、青いシルクのネクタイを身に着けています。そしていちばん重要なのは、フレンチカラーとフレンチカフスの、下ろしたてのコットンシャツも着ていることです。彼は金製品を身に着けるタイプではないので、私たちを選んでくれたのです、銀製ですからね。私の顔は四角くて、シンプルな青い石がはめ込まれています─もちろん、ご主人のネクタイに合わせて。そして、一つ一つに細い銀の柱があって、そこに、私たちがボタン穴から落ちるのを防ぐために、ひょいっと向きを変えるちょっとした足が付いています。
悲しいことに、私たちは、ご主人がクローゼットにしまってある小さな箱の中で静かに座って、大半の時間を過ごします。そこが、フォーマル過ぎている点の問題なんです。私たちは、黒の蝶ネクタイ着用のきらびやかなイベントや重要な会議、そして言わずもがな、結婚式でしか見られません。でも待ってください！例のスピーチが今から始まるところです。ご主人は話すとき、身ぶり手ぶりをするのが好きなので、私たちは彼の上着の袖からそっとのぞいて、とても見やすいことでしょう。さあ、始まりますよ！
