「Words from a Forgotten Friend」

➊Well, well! ➋What brings you to my forgotten shelf? A little ➌nostalgia perhaps? A ➍broken heart? A new love, maybe? It’s been years since I last saw you. I believe the last time you ➎glanced at me was in high school. And if I’m not mistaken, you weren’t too happy about it. But I know. The problem is when teachers turn me into homework to memorize, or a ➏riddle to be solved, most people just forget about me after the exam. And that’s sad, really, because I wasn’t made to be a test. ➐I’m supposed to be enjoyed!

Some people say our kind are difficult to understand, but I’m not sure that’s true. We’re only words ➑after all. I admit that some of my ➒relatives can be pretty ➓wordy. I mean, those guys from ancient Greece and Europe, they’re hundreds of years old, and, ⓫boy — they ⓬go on and on and on! Me? I’m only a page long. And most of us these days aren’t much longer than that.

Of course, many of us have unique rules. Maybe that’s what sometimes confuses people.

For example:
Some ⓭folks think we always need to ⓮rhyme,
But that’s not true all of the time.
Some of us need a certain number of lines,
Or a rhythm that runs like a very . . . fine . . . wine . . . ?

⓯Yikes. As I said, I’m really not the rhyming type. Now, where was I? Ah, yes. Did you know that some of my Japanese relatives are only three lines long? I have a very famous cousin who’s always talking about a frog and a pond. It doesn’t seem like much to me, but others think he’s quite deep.

Anyway, it’s good to see you again. Go on, open the book . . . I’m on Page 83.

「忘れ去られた友人の言葉」

おや、おや！どうしてまた、忘れ去られた私の棚にいらっしゃったのですか？ちょっと郷愁に駆られたとか？失恋？もしかして新しい恋ですか？最後にお目にかかってから何年もたっていますね。私をちらっと見てくださったのは、高校時代が最後だったと思います。もし私の記憶が間違っていなければ、そのとき、あなたはあまり楽しそうではありませんでしたよね。でもわかります。問題なのは、教師が私を暗記する宿題を出したり、解答すべき難問扱いしたりすると、たいていの人は、その試験が終わると私のことを忘れてしまう、ということです。それは本当に悲しいです、私はテストのために作られたわけではないのですから。本来は、楽しんでもらうためのものなんですよ！

私たちの仲間は理解しづらい、と言う人も中にはいますが、それが本当かどうかわかりません。私たちはしょせん、ただの言葉ですから。親戚の中にすごく言葉数が多いとも言える人がいるのは認めます。つまり、古代ギリシャやヨーロッパ出身の親戚とかはね、生まれてから何百年もたっていて、やれやれ―彼らときたら、延々と続くんです！私ですか？私はたったの1ページですよ。最近は私たちの仲間のほとんどが、それよりもせいぜい少し長い程度です。

もちろん、私たちには独自の規則を持っているものもたくさんいます。たぶんそれで、皆さんが時々混乱されることがあるのでしょう。

例えば、
私たちには常に押韻が必要だと考える人もいる
でもいつもそうだというわけじゃない。
中には決まったライン（行数）が必要な者もいる
あるいは、とても・・・ファイン（上等）な・・・ワインのようなリズム・・・？

おっと。お伝えしたとおり、私は本当に、韻をうまく踏むタイプではないんです。さてと、どこまで話しましたっけ？ああ、そうだ。私には、たった3行だけの親戚も日本にいるのをご存じでしたか？カエルと池の話ばかりしている、とても有名ないとこがいるんです。私には大したことないように思えますが、彼はすごく奥深いと考えられています。

何はともあれ、また会えてよかったです。さあどうぞ、本を開いて・・・私は83ページにいますよ。
