イギリス英語とアメリカ英語の違いをトーク!! FlatとApartmentの違いってわかる？
Michael : 今日はイギリス英語とアメリカ英語のボキャブラリーの違いを見ていこう！今日のお題は、“apartment”と“flat”の違い。
Ann: イギリスとかロンドンとかに旅行に行った時、いつも不思議だったんだけど、皆が“I'm going back to my flat”と表現しているのを聞いて、その表現が何に由来するのか、なぜ“flat”なのかって、と思っていたんだけど、どうしてイギリスの人は“flat”って言うの？
Michael : なぜ“flat”っていうのかって？まぁ、まず思い浮かぶのは、大抵の場合、“flat”ていうのは1階建てで、平屋なんだよね。聞いた話だと、「平らな面」を意味する13世紀頃の古英語“flett”に遡るみたい。だから、イギリスの“flat”っていうのは、いつも1つの平らな場所のことを指しているんだよね。
Ann : なるほど、じゃあイギリス英語の“flat”は一階建てってこと？
Michael : 大抵の場合は、そうだね。例外はあるかもしれないけど、普通はそうだよ。「平らなフラット」ってこと(笑)
Ann : アメリカで育ったから、私はそんな風に考えたことなかった。“flat”は「平らなもの」って意味で使うよ。"flat as a pancake"みたいに。
Michael : おお、その表現はイギリスにもあるな。アメリカでは “apartment”はいろいろなものを指すの？
Ann : そうだね。高級マンションの場合もあるし、もっとシンプルなアパートの場合もそう。なんにでも“apartment”を使ってる。じゃあ、イギリスでは高層マンションなんかは何て言うの？
Michael : その前に、高級マンションの話だけど、実はイギリスも同じなんだ。
Ann : へえ、“apartment”を使うんだ。
Michael : でも“apartment”を使う場合、一般的に豪華で高級なんだよね。それに対して、“flat”の場合はケチで退屈な感じがある。だから、イギリスで“apartment”はステイタスの意味があるよね。で、高層マンションについてだけど、“blocks of flats”って呼ぶかな。
Ann : え、そうは思わなかった。私たちはそういう風には言わないかな。あり得ないとまでは思わないけど。
Michael : じゃあ何ていうの？“apartment building”とか？
Ann : “apartment building”は言うよね。それか “condominium”だね。イギリスだと“condominium”はどんな意味？
Michael : いや、全然わからないな。
Ann : "condominium"って言う？
Michael : 言わないな。一度も言ったことないよ。アメリカのテレビを通してしか馴染みのないものだよ。“condominium”っなに？
Ann : “condominium”っていうのは“apartment”の集まりで、大抵は分譲で売られているものを指すかな。日本では「マンション」って呼ばれているやつだと思う。だよね？
Michael : そのようだね。
Ann : なんだかとても深いテーマですね。
Michael : 驚いた。
Ann : このテーマについてもう少しお話したいところですが、そろそろ終わりにしましょうか。

Ann Slater : Hello, everyone, and welcome to the YouTube edition of Quick Chat.
I’m Ann.
Michael Rhys : And I’m Mike. And today, we are going to be looking at differences in the vocabulary between British and American English. Today’s subject is the difference between apartment and flat.
Ann: I’ve always wondered, actually, when I’ve traveled in, in the U.K. or been in London, and people say, “I’m going back to my flat,” and I wondered where that comes from or why. Why do people say “flat”?
Michael : Why do people say flat ?
Ann : Uh-huh.
Michael : Well, the first thing that comes to mind is that, for the most part, flats are on a single story, and so they are, therefore, flat.
Ann : Yeah. Uh-huh.
Michael : But, I believe, from what I heard, is the, the word goes back, I think, to something like the 13th century, to an old English word, which was “flett ,” which means, like, on a level plane.
Ann : Ah, ah. So, is it, so a flat in the U.K. is always one, one level? It’s not …
Michael : Usually.
Ann : You wouldn’t have stairs or that kind of thing.
Michael : Usually. you might have some which, um, are multilevel. I think that’s, uh, less common. But, yeah, for the most part, I think they are, they’re flat.
Ann : Uh-huh.
Michael : They are “flat flats.”
Ann : Ha-ha. That’s in—yeah, we never – I mean, to my knowledge, uh, growing up in the States – I’ve never heard that.
Michael : Really!
Ann : We would use flat means something that’s flat, like we say “flat as a pancake.”
Michael : Oh, OK. Well, we have that expression as well.
Ann : Uh-huh. Right .
Michael : So you use “apartment pretty much for everything?
Ann : For everything. Yeah, it could be, um, a luxury apartment. It could be a, a, a simpler kind of apartment. But we would use that for everything. And then, what about, for you, like, uh, tall apartment buildings? Like, what do you …?
Michael : Well, actually, I was gonna say, um, you, you just mentioned “luxury apartment” – that, we do use.
Ann : That’s “apartment.”
Michael : Because when we use the word “apartment,” um, it generally means something more upscale – a luxury level. Then, the word “flat” just sounds, meh, not that interesting, you know. So they, they call them “apartments” to give them that sense of status, you know. But we do have, um, the, the tall buildings, and we call those “blocks of flats.”
Ann : Oh! Mm-hmm.
Michael : You wouldn’t?
Ann : I, I, I, I don’t particularly think that, that doesn’t ring, uh, you know, sound like something we use so much. I mean, I don’t think it would be, like, unthinkable, you know, to say it, but, but not—
Michael : So, you would refer to it, what, like an apartment building or …?
Ann : We would say “apartment building.” Uh, it could be a condominium. And …
Michael : Oh. Yeah. I’ve heard that.
Ann : Yeah. In the U.K., what is a condominium?
Michael : It’s … I have no idea.
Ann : Do you say “condominium”?
Michael : No. I certainly never used that when I was in the U.K. And that’s a word I’ve only become familiar with through, um, American TV. So, what is a condominium?
Ann : A condominium is a collection of, uh, apartments and that often that you can, uh, buy, that are for sale. And I suppose that it’s what’s a “mansion” here, right?
Michael : I guess so. I guess so.
Ann : Ha-ha. Clearly, it’s clearly rather a deep subject, isn’t it? Ha-ha.
Michael : Ha-ha. Surprisingly, yeah.
Ann : That we would love to talk more about. But I guess we have to wrap up now.
Michael : We do. So don’t forget. Apartment – American English. Flat – British
English.
Ann : And sometimes, sometimes apartment -- British English.
Michael : Yeah. If you’ve got the money for it.
