世界の破滅まで「過去最短」に
人類が滅亡する瞬間を真夜中の0時に見立て、それまでの残り時間を象徴的に示す「終末時計」。2025年は、2023年と2024年の「残り90秒」からさらに1秒針が進められ、これまでで最も短くなりました。終末時計を毎年発表しているのは、アメリカの科学誌『原子力科学者会報（Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists）』〔＊1〕です。同誌の科学・安全保障委員の一人であるHerb Lin氏がインタビューに答えています。

Doomsday Clock Moved Closest ever to Midnight
Anchor: Scientists on Tuesday moved the hands on the so-called Doomsday Clock. （中略） The Bulletin of Atomic Scientists was created in 1947 during Cold War tensions following World War II. It was meant to warn the public about how close humankind was to destroying the world.

Tell us a little bit about the process of how these group of experts, including yourself, come to the decision on what the Doomsday Clock will be.

Herb Lin (spokesperson for Bulletin of Atomic Scientists): It‘s a collective decision that the board itself takes. （中略）Then the question is, what do you take into account? And the, one question is, that we ask, is, “Are we safer this year than we were last year?” And the second question is taking into account the history of the clock, you know, in the historical perspective.

The people who said go forward, there are some people who say that, you know, we should move it forward by a lot or a little. We, we sort of thought about it and said, you know, well, the last time we moved it, we moved it 10 seconds because of the war in Ukraine. Is there anything in the last year that is comparable to that? The answer was no.

The last time we changed it was in 2022. How could you move it only one second? Well, the answer was the, you know, thought was that we were more concerned, you know, with actions than with words. （中略） For example, uh, we didn’t, we didn’t talk about this publicly in the, in, in today’s, uh, session, but to make an argument, for example, that Trump is the, the sort of person who could bring it, bring home a, a kind of Nixon-goes-to-China kind of a m-m-moment where Trump could actually deliver a deal ― good arms control deal. So, you know, there's a lot that's unknown. Let's see what happens after a year.

終末時計、これまでで最も真夜中に近づく
キャスター：火曜日、科学者たちはいわゆる終末時計の針を動かしました。（中略）『原子力科学者会報』は第二次世界大戦に続く冷戦の緊張の中、1947年に創刊されました。それは人類が世界を破壊するのにどれほど近づいているかについて、人々に警告するためのものでした。

あなたを含むこの専門家集団が、終末時計がどうなるかを決定する、そのプロセスについて少し教えてください。

前に進めることを主張した人々、多少なりとも針を進めるべきだと主張する人々がいるのです。私たちはそれについて考え、前回針を進めた時、ウクライナでの戦争が原因で10秒進めたことを話しました。それに匹敵するようなことが昨年何かあったでしょうか。答えはノーでした。

最後に私たちがそれを変更したのは2022年でした。なぜ1秒しか進められないのでしょうか。その答えは、私たちが言葉よりも行動により関心を寄せていたためです。（中略）例えば、このことについて本日の会議では公式には話しませんでしたが、一つの主張として、例えばトランプは、ニクソンの訪中のような瞬間をもたらすことができるタイプの人間かもしれません。良い軍備制限の協定を実際に成し遂げるかもしれない瞬間を、です。つまり、わからないことがたくさんあるのです。1年後にどうなるか見てみましょう。
