Some Like It Hot
Well, it is that time of year in Japan when you hear over and over, “Atsui desu ne!” Man, it’s hot! We all know that July is supposed to be hot, but we say it anyway. For some reason, it makes us feel a little better when we know that others are sharing our misery.
Many of us will head out to overcrowded beaches or make do with a refreshing dip in a local pool. We put on lighter clothes and more vibrant colors and make the most of all the fun summer festivals and the abundance of spectacular firework shows. The skies put on a show for us, too. Great visibility is predicted for Saturn and Venus mid-month.
暑いのがお好き
さて、日本では「暑いですね！」という言葉を何度も聞く時期がやって来ました。いやあ、暑いですね！7月は暑いものだと誰もがわかっていますが、とにかく言ってしまいます。どういうわけか、他の人たちが苦痛を共に味わっていると分かると、気持ちが少し晴れるのです。
私たちの多くは混み合うビーチに出かけたり、地元のプールで気分転換にひと泳ぎしたりするでしょう。軽くて鮮やかな色の服を着て、楽しい夏祭りや豪華な花火大会を存分に楽しむのです。空も私たちのためにショーを披露してくれます。今月中旬には、土星と金星がよく見えると予測されています。
A Month for Special Days
Speaking of the skies, Tanabata, or the “star festival,” takes place on July 7 – the seventh day of the seventh month. And then there is Marine Day, which falls on July 17 this year, when we show gratitude for the blessings of the ocean. In North America, Americans light up the skies with fireworks on the fourth of July – known as Independence Day – while their neighbors to the north do so on the first of July, or Canada Day, their nation’s “birthday.” Meanwhile, France celebrates its national day, Bastille Day, on the 14th, and South Korea commemorates its Constitution Day on July 17. Of course, there are too many special days to mention, but wherever you go in the world, you can find a reason to party!
特別な日のためのひと月
空といえば、七夕、すなわち「star festival」は7月7日――7番目の月の7日目に行われます。それから海の日があります、今年は7月17日で、海の恵みへの感謝を示す日です。北米では、アメリカ人は独立記念日として知られる7月4日に花火で空を照らしますが、北の隣国であるカナダでは7月1日、つまり国の「誕生日」であるカナダ・デーに花火を打ち上げます。一方、フランスは14日に国家的記念日であるフランス革命記念日を、韓国は7月17日に憲法記念日を祝います。もちろん、特別な日は枚挙にいとまがありませんが、世界中どこに行ってもパーティーをする理由を見つけることができるでしょう！
Origin of the Name
Because it was originally the fifth month of the year in the Roman calendar, the month was originally called Quintilis – Latin for “fifth.” (The months of January and February were added later, turning it into the seventh month.) The name was changed to Julius in honor of Julius Caesar, who was born on July 12, following his death in 44 B.C.

もともとはローマ暦において1年の中で5番目の月であったため、ラテン語で「5番目」を意味するクインティリスと呼ばれていました（後に1月と2月が追加され、7番目の月になりました）。その名称は、7月12日生まれのジュリアス・シーザーが紀元前44年に亡くなった後、彼にちなんでユリウスへと変更されました。

Dog days of July
A variation of the more well-known “dog days of summer,” this phrase implies a time of discomfort or lethargy due to the scorching weather. “Kakigori is great for staying cool during the dog days of July.”
より広く知られている「dog days of summer（盛夏、夏の最も暑い時期）」のバリエーションで、灼熱（しゃくねつ）の天候によって不快になったり無気力になったりする時期を意味しています。 例：「かき氷は7月の猛暑の期間を涼しく過ごすのに最適です」
Fourth of July
This expression now is not only used to refer to Independence Day in the United States but to any significant event or occasion. “He kissed me, and it was like the fourth of July!”
この表現は今や、アメリカの独立記念日だけではなく、あらゆる重要なイベントや出来事について言及するために使われています。例：「彼は私にキスしたの。まるで独立記念日（みたいに重要なこと）よ！」
A cold day in July
This refers to an event that seems unlikely or will never come to pass. “Ha, it will be a cold day in July before I ever let him use my car again.”
