「Standing in a Lonely Line」
Listen to that my friend. No, no. Not the sound of birds or distant cars. Not the wind ➊howling down this ➋mountainside. It’s a sound lower than that. A kind of ➌hum. Some say it sounds like a distant ➍beehive. But to me, it sounds like ➎power. Do you hear it? What do you mean you can’t hear anything?
➏Oh, well. It’s not like I personally have any power. I mean, I can’t even move. But power and strength? Well, those are two different things. And I’m built to be strong — ➐solid steel, top to bottom. I’m so tall and heavy, they have to ➑bolt my four legs down to a big concrete base so I won’t ➒sink into the ground. See, my responsibility is looking after all that power. It runs through a collection of wires that weigh thousands of kilograms, and it’s my job to keep them high above the trees where they can’t hurt anyone.
I have siblings and relatives all over the planet, from city to countryside, made of everything from steel to concrete to wood. We stand in a line from any place that produces power to any place with people that need it. My nearest sisters are half a kilometer away in either direction, so we never speak. But that’s life for us, I guess. It’s lonely work. Even the ➓squirrels and ⓫raccoons aren’t interested in us. But it’s ⓬just as well. Climbing one of us would be a terrible idea. That’s why we have all these ⓭aluminium warning signs.
⓮Then again, the only people I ever see out here are lost ⓯hikers like you, and there aren’t many of those. Just ⓰head back the way you came. You’ll find the ⓱trail. Or, if you’re really lost, you could just follow our lines. They’ll take you to a town eventually.

「孤独な列に並ぶ」
ねえ、あれを聞いてください。いいえ、違います。鳥の声でも、遠くの車の音でもありませんよ。この山の中腹でヒューヒューいっている風でもありません。それよりも低い音です。ブンブン鳴っている感じの音です。遠くにある蜂の巣みたいだ、と言う人もいます。でも私には、力パワーのように聞こえますね。聞こえますか？何も聞こえないって、どういうことですか？
まあ、構いません。私が個人的に何らかの力を持っているというわけではないんです。つまり、その、私は動くことすらできないんです。でも、力と強さですって？まあ、それらは異なる2つのものです。そして私は強く作られていますよ─上から下まで100%鋼鉄です。背がすごく高くて重いので、地面に沈み込まないよう、大きなコンクリートの基礎に4つの脚をボルトで固定しなければなりません。いいですか、私の責務はそれらの力パワー全体を管理することなんです。それは重さが何千キロもあるワイヤーの束の中を通っていくのですが、そのワイヤーを、誰もけがをしないよう木よりも高く保つのが私の仕事です。
私には地球の至る所、都会から田舎まで、鋼鉄からコンクリート、木でできたきょうだいや親戚がいます。私たちは、電パワー力を生み出す地点から、それを必要とする人のいる地点まで、一列になって並びます。いちばん近くの姉妹は、両方向の、500メートル離れた所にいるので、話すことはありません。でもそれが私たちの人生なんだと思います。孤独な仕事です。リスやアライグマですら、私たちには興味を持ちません。でもその方がむしろいいんです。私たちに登ろうなんて考えたら、とんでもないことになります。そんなわけで、私たちにはこれらすべての、アルミニウムの警告標識が付いているんです。
その一方で、ここで見掛ける人間といえば、あなたのような道に迷ったハイカーくらいですが、それも大勢いるわけではありません。来た道をただ戻ればいいだけですよ。道が見つかるでしょう。もし本当に途方に暮れているなら、私たちの列をたどることもできます。そうすれば、いずれ街に着きますから。
