「➊A String of Apologies」

Look, I’m so sorry. I really am. I know this must be ➋driving you crazy. Ha-ha, I mean, no one could be more embarrassed by the noise than me, but I just ➌can’t help it right now. I want to blame my owner, of course, but she’s only a little girl. So, I really hope you can forgive us. These walls really are ➍paper-thin.

You know, what’s most embarrassing about it is the fact that ➎I’m meant to sound beautiful! I mean, my kind have been designed for it for centuries. I’m not an expensive model, so I’m never going to sound like the famous greats - but still, in ➏the right hands, I’d sound so much better. My wooden body is so light, and it’s ➐hollow to let the sound ➑vibrate ➒back and forth inside. And once in a while, she gets it right. For just a moment, the horsehair runs across my four strings just right, and the sound is clear, and I imagine that we are in a gold-➓decorated concert hall in Italy, playing ⓫Bach or ⓬Mozart.

And then my strings ⓭squawk and ⓮shriek, and my owner’s music teacher ⓯winces, and I remember that we’re in the living room playing ⓰“Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star” one more time. I can only imagine all of the poor people like you who live upstairs or downstairs and have to hear me. But she will get better. All it takes is practice, right? Well, she’s putting me under her chin again. The bow is on my strings. Maybe today, we’ll get a little bit closer to that concert hall.

まあ、大変申し訳ありません。本当に。いらいらなさるでしょう。ハハハ、ええ、私がいちばんこの雑音に困っているんですけれど、今は仕方がありません。もちろん、ご主人のせいにしたいところですが、まだほんの小さな女の子なんですよ。ですから、どうかお許しくださいね。壁が本当に紙のように薄いんですもの。

ねえ、何がいちばん当惑するかといえば、実際は私は美しい音がするように作られているのにってことなんです！つまり、私たちは何世紀にもわたって、そのために作られてきたんです。私は高価なモデルではないので、名器のように響くことは決してないでしょうが―それでも、ちゃんとした人の手にかかれば、もっとずっといい音がします。私の木製の体はとても軽くて、空洞になっているから、音が中であちこちに反響します。たまには、ご主人もうまくやりますよ。一瞬ですが、馬の毛が私の4本の弦の上をちょうどうまく走りさえすれば、きれいな音がして、イタリアの金ぴかのコンサートホールでバッハかモーツァルトを弾いているかのように想像してしまいます。

そこへ、弦がギーギーと甲高い音を出して、ご主人の音楽の先生が顔をしかめ、私たちは居間で「きらきら星」をもう一度弾いているんだったと思い出します。私が想像できるのは、上や下の階に住んでいて私の音を聞かされているあなたのようなかわいそうな人たちのことばかり。でも、ご主人だってうまくなります。練習さえすれば、そうでしょう？さあ、ご主人がまた私を顎の下に挟みます。弓は弦の上です。今日はもしかしたら、あのコンサートホールに少しでも近づけるかもしれません。
