6月2日、メキシコで6年に一度の大統領選が行われました。有力な2人の候補はいずれも女性で、初の女性大統領の誕生は確実視されていました。大勝を収めた与党のシェインバウム氏はユダヤ系で、カトリックが圧倒的多数派を占めるメキシコにとっては、2つの点で歴史的な節目となりそうです。
Mexico elects its first woman president
Reporter: In a landslide victory, 61-year-old Claudia Sheinbaum has been elected the first woman and first president of Jewish heritage to lead Mexico, an overwhelmingly Roman Catholic nation in which males have dominated politics during its more than 200-year history. Sheinbaum, a climate scientist and the former mayor of Mexico City, campaigned on a promise to continue the policies of Mexico’s current president, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador. The leftist president-elect gave a nod to all Mexican women after preliminary results show she garnered at least 58 percent of the vote.

Reporter: Her nearest competitor, Xochitl Galvez, representing a coalition of three opposition parties, received 28.1 percent in preliminary results. Galvez recognized Sheinbaum’s win early Monday.

Reporter: Security expert Ana Maria Salazar says Sheinbaum will face many major issues.
Salazar (voice-over): There are many pending issues, including fentanyl trafficking and the impact it’s having in the United States. There are some trade issues that have to do with the implementation of the T-MEC – the renegotiation of the T-MEC – which is going to take place in 2026. And especially about the immigration issue, which has become a political issue in the United States that could even define who is the next president of the United States.
Reporter: Election officials say the president-elect’s ruling Morena party now also has the majority in Congress. Sheinbaum is scheduled to be sworn in for a six-year term on October 1.
