言葉の壁、医療の壁を共に乗り越える

今回は、コロラド州のクリニックで働くウクライナの人々にスポットを当てます。患者が抱える問題、そして医療従事者が提供するヘルスケアとは？

Colorado clinic provides Ukrainian refugees with care in own language

Narrator: Liana Marienko came to Denver, Colorado in the fall of 2022. In her native town of Vinnytsia she was working in diagnostics[diagnostic] medicine〔＊1〕. In Colorado, Marienko found a similar job from the owner of a local clinic.〔＊2〕

Marienko (clinic employee)〈voice of interpreter〉: One morning she called me, said she knew I had a medical degree and told me she had a job at the clinic for me.

Narrator: That “she” is Ellie Titarenko, who came to the U.S. from Ukraine over two decades ago.

Titarenko (clinic owner)〈voice of interpreter〉: It was really important for me to help people who only just came here from Ukraine, who may not be able to speak English very fluently yet.

Narrator: In 2021, Alina – or “Ellie” – Titarenko opened Arvada West Family Medicine Clinic in Arvada, Colorado, northwest of Denver. Every month the clinic sees some 500 patients. About 80 percent of them are Ukrainian.

Anna Parsaeva (patient)〈voice of interpreter〉: When we arrived, we had problems with insurance and a language barrier. Ellie helped us a lot. She told us what to do.

Hanna Leskiv (patient)〈voice of interpreter〉: I had problems with blood pressure in Ukraine and Alina helped me normalize that, and then got me my medicine.

Titarenko (clinic owner)〈voice of interpreter〉: It breaks my heart that war alters human psychology to the point where they stop valuing what should be most precious – their life. We teach patients how to live one day at a time, because worrying about the future brings anxiety; worrying about the past often leads to depression.

Narrator: Today, seven out of ten staff at the clinic are Ukrainians, and many more are interning at the clinic. In the future, Titarenko hopes to open another clinic in Colorado and employ more Ukrainian professionals there.

ナレーター： 現在、クリニックのスタッフ10人のうち7人がウクライナ人で、さらに多くの人々がインターンとして働いています。将来的に、ティタレンコはコロラド州でさらにクリニックを開業し、より多くのウクライナ人専門家を雇用したいと考えています。
