「Mostly Mornings」

Oh! Hey, there! Good morning! Wow! Is it that time already? Gosh! OK. Let’s get started! Wait, where’re you going? Oh, to brush your teeth? Oh, OK. I get it. Hurry back! I can’t do this without you, you know!

Silly me, I should know by now. I mean, I just get a bit excited. ➊That’s the way I am, you know? Kind of ➋excitable. I guess that makes me a ➌morning person. Although I like afternoons. Evenings are great, too. And all-night study sessions! Oh, I love those, too! Anyway, when my owner gets back, she’ll ➍fill me with cool water and help me get started. I mean, I’m a simple, little machine. I’m mostly made of plastic, but, of course, I have this beautiful, big, glass container and a nice, heated metal plate for it to sit on. And a few ➎electronics of course. But someone has to fill me up with the right ingredients before I can, like, really start cooking. Wait, no. Not cooking. ➏Brewing! That’s the word.

Am I talking too much? People say I talk too much. Well, when I say “people,” I mean other ➐appliances. They say I talk too much. My owner ➑barely hears me. When she ➒flips my switch, all she hears is a kind of ➓watery ⓫burbling noise and a sigh or two, as the hot water ⓬works its way through those ⓭ground-up beans. And once I’m finished, there’s no sound at all … Well, other than the sound of my owner ⓮pouring out a nice cup of rich, black happiness to ⓯kick-start her day. Oh! Here she comes now!

私もばかね、もうわかってるのにね。つまり、ただちょっと興奮しているだけよ。私っていつもこう、知ってるでしょ？興奮しやすいタイプ。だから朝型なんでしょうね。好きなのは午後だけど。夜だっていいわ。それから、夜通しの勉強会！ああ、あれも大歓迎よ！とにかく、ご主人さまが戻ってきたら、私に冷たい水を入れて、始めるのを手伝ってくれるわ。つまり、私はシンプルで小さな機械なの。ほとんどがプラスチックでできているけど、もちろんこのきれいで大きなガラスの容器と、それを置くすてきな金属の保温プレートもあるわ。そしてもちろん、電子機器も少々。だけど先に誰かが正しい材料をいっぱい入れてくれなくては、実際に、その、料理を始めるにはね。待って、違うわ。料理するんじゃなくて。入れる！そう言うのよ。

私、しゃべり過ぎかしら？しゃべり過ぎだって人に言われるのよね。ええ、「人」っていうのは、ほかの電化製品たちのことよ。彼らにはしゃべり過ぎだって言われるの。ご主人さまには私の声はほとんど聞こえないわ。彼女が私のスイッチを入れると、聞こえるのは水のゴボゴボいうような音と、あの挽かれて粉になった豆の間をお湯が通っていくときのため息のような音が1、2回だけ。そして出来上がれば、まったく音はしなくなるわ・・・そう、ご主人さまが、これからの1日に弾みを付けるための、カップ1杯の黒く芳醇（ほうじゅん）なおいしい幸せを注ぐ音以外はね。あら！さあ、ご主人さまが来たわ！
