「Loud and Proud」
You hear that? Hear that ➊roar? That’s like fine music to me. A serenade! I could listen to it all day. Well, I do, actually. I mean, it gets quieter late at night. But even then, you get just enough time to hear a few ➋crickets, then, ➌whoosh! There goes another one. It feels great, too, all that heavy weight running down my back. Like a massage, you know? A heavy massage that goes on for days and days.
People get so used to me they don’t even notice me most of the time, even when they’re using me! When they do notice me, they usually think I’m pretty ugly. But that’s fine. I know I’m ➍not much to look at. I’ve got a few white lines painted on me, a few oil ➎stains, but other than that, I’m just long, curvy and gray.
But ➏there’s more to me than that. My ➐ancestors have been around about as long as humans have. We started out simple — worn into the ground by feet and horses’ ➑hooves. Then people started ➒covering us with stones to make us stronger. But these days? Ha! I’m a ➓feat of engineering! People wanna get places fast, after all. And you can’t go a hundred kilometers an hour on ⓫cobblestones.
I’m not just some path or track, you know. I was carefully planned out and ⓬flattened, ⓭tilted just enough to let the rain ⓮run off me. They ⓯split me into four lanes — two going one way and two the other, with a concrete ⓰divider down the middle — so faster folks can pass slower ones. And I’m covered in high-grade asphalt that can take the heat of a thousand tires ⓱zooming over me. Those two-lane guys don’t even compare! My kind stretch all over the country, connecting towns and cities. And sure, it can get a little crowded at times. But what can I say? I guess I’m just popular like that.

「高らかに誇らかに」
あれが聞こえるかい？あのとどろきが聞こえるかい？僕にとってはあれが妙（たえ）なる調べさ。セレナーデだ！一日中だって聞いていられるね。まあ、実際聞いているんだ。まあ、夜遅くにはもっと静かになるよ。けれどその時分でさえ、コオロギの鳴き声が聞こえると思う間もなく、ビューン！ほらまた行ったよ。体も気持ちいいんだ、あのずっしりした重み全体が僕の背中を走って行くのが。マッサージみたいだろ？力強いマッサージが何日も何日も続くのさ。
人間は僕を見慣れていて、たいてい僕に気付きもしないよ。僕を利用しているときでさえね！気付いたとしても、僕をかなり見苦しいと思うのが普通だ。まあそれはいいさ。自分だって見てくれが悪いのはわかっているよ。僕には白線が2、3本引かれていて、オイルの染みがいくつかあるけれど、それ以外はただ長く、曲がりくねっていて、灰色なんだ。
だけど僕はそれだけの存在じゃないさ。僕の祖先は人間とほぼ同じぐらい昔から存在しているんだ。始めはただの―人間の足や馬のひづめが地面を踏み固めたものだった。それから人間が補強のために僕たちを石で覆うようになった。それが今やどうだい？ああ！僕こそ工業技術の結晶だ！人間は何しろ速く移動したがるし。丸い敷石の上では1時間に100キロメートルもの速さで移動できないからね。
僕は小道や通り道なんかじゃないよ、もちろん。入念に計画され、平らにされ、雨が流れ落ちるように少し傾けられているんだ。そして四つのレーンに分割され―真ん中がコンクリートの分離帯で仕切られて、二つが一方向で、もう二つが反対方向―速い人が遅い人を追い越せるようにね。そして僕の上を疾走する多数のタイヤの熱に耐えられる上等なアスファルトで覆われているよ。二車線の連中なんか比較にならないね！僕たちは国中に伸びていて、町や都市をつないでいるよ。確かに時にはちょっと混み合うこともあるさ。だけど僕に何が言えるっていうんだい？それだけ人気があるんだと思ってるよ。
