「➊Chatty Companion」
➋Eek! Don’t step on me! Ah! Oh.➌Phew! For a moment there, I thought you were going to ➍squash me. I mean, it wouldn’t be the first time, and my little plastic legs aren’t much use ➎when it comes to ➏getting out of the way. It’s a good thing I’m made to ➐last.
Where are you putting me? Oh, thank you! Yes, I definitely like being here in my little house better than on the floor. It’s a lot less dangerous,➑for starters. And I can see the
whole bedroom from here. I see you’ve cleaned it up nicely. There were an awful lot of toys ➒lying around before. Oh, wait … You’re leaving? But I thought you’d ➓stay for tea!
Oh, well. ⓫That’s adults for you. They’re never really interested in me. My real owner might be only 6 years old, but she ⓬lavishes me with attention. Of course, she’s also the one that drops me and squashes me sometimes … but she does it with love. Most of the time, she moves me around in my little house and talks to me. She even pretends I’m ⓭talking back. In a way, I feel like we’re best friends, even if I’m only made of plastic. She brushes my hair, too! Sometimes, she’ll put me down in a chair next to a tiny table with some other toys — ⓮fluffy teddy bears and a couple of strange ⓯stuffed animals — and we all have a nice imaginary tea party. I couldn’t really drink tea, of course … but it’s fun to imagine it! I’ve always got a smile on my face, but when I’m playing with my owner, I’m smiling inside, too!

キャーッ！踏まないで！あっ！ああ。ふう！一瞬、踏みつぶされるかと思ったわ。初めてってわけじゃないけど、私の小さなプラスチックの足では、よけるのにあまり役に立たないし。丈夫に作られていてよかったわ。
私をどこに置くの？あら、ありがとう！そうよ、床の上よりも私の小さな家のここにいるほうが断然いいわ。第一、ずっと安全だもの。それにここからはベッドルームじゅうが見渡せるし。きれいに片付けてくれたのがわかるわ。さっきまですっごくたくさんおもちゃが散らかってたから。あら、待って・・・もう行っちゃうの？ お茶を飲んでいってくれると思ったのに！
まあね。あなたは大人だもの。大人は私になんか、まったく興味ないわよね。私の本当の持ち主はたったの6歳かもしれないけど、私に夢中なのよ。もちろん、時々私を落としたり、押しつぶしたりするのも彼女だけど・・・それも愛情あってのことよ。いつもは私を小さな家の中で動かして、話し掛けてくれるわ。私が答えるふりだってしてくれるの。ある意味、私たちは一番の親友って気がするわ。私がプラスチックでできていてもね。私の髪をとかしてもくれるの！時には小さなテーブルの横の椅子に私を座らせて、ほかのおもちゃたち─ふわふわのテディベアやおかしな動物のぬいぐるみたち─と一緒に、すてきなティーパーティーごっこをするのよ。もちろん、本当にお茶が飲めるわけじゃないわ・・・でも、想像するのは楽しいでしょ！私の顔はいつでもほほ笑んでいるけれど、持ち主と一緒に遊んでいるときは、私の心もほほ笑んでいるのよ！
