「Close for Comfort」
Ooh! Well, that was a ➊cheeky ➋squeeze! That’s all right. I am rather squeezable, and it’s always nice to know that you enjoy my company. After all, one might almost consider our relationship a little bit … ➌intimate. ➍Now, now. It’s not that kind of intimate! But when you spend ➎hour after hour together, you do get to know a person rather well. For example, I know the exact color of your hair, and the fact that you’ve been working a bit too hard lately, and that your breath is … just a little unpleasant in the morning. Sorry.
Now, it’s not ➏as though you couldn’t live without me, of course. I’m just one of those ➐creature comforts that people expect. In fact, almost everyone everywhere has at least one of me. Sometimes two!
I’m not sure exactly how long humans have been depending on us. Probably since ➑prehistoric times, really! Can’t you just picture some poor prehistoric man or woman sitting in a ➒chilly ➓cave, gathering up leaves or grass or … animal fur, just to get a better sleep? Of course, today my kind are made of nicer materials than leaves. I, myself, have a simple cotton cover, but my insides are made of a ⓫space-age ⓬foam that was invented to be used on the space shuttle. Well, that’s what they printed on my box. My more traditional siblings are filled with feathers. Or bits of foam. Or cloth fibers. Or sometimes even ⓭grains of ⓮barley! Anything that’s soft but also a little firm.
Seriously, though, isn’t it time for you to get out of bed? I suppose it is Saturday. And you have been working rather hard. I guess I don’t mind letting you rest your head on me for just a little longer. Just try to keep the ⓯snoring down. I mean, honestly …

あら、まあ！ずいぶんギュッと顔を押し付けてくるのね！まあいいのよ。私はギュッとしたくなるようなタイプですものね。私がそばにいることを喜んでくれるのはいつだってうれしいし。結局、私たちの関係はちょっと・・・親密って言えるだろうから。まあ、落ち着いて。そういう意味での親密な関係ではないのよ！でも何時間も一緒にいれば、その人のことがかなりよくわかるようになるのよね。例えば、あなたの髪の正確な色とか、最近あなたがちょっと働き過ぎだってことはわかるわ。それから、あなたの息・・・朝はちょっといただけないのよね。ごめんなさい。
そう、私がいないとあなたが暮らせないというわけじゃないわ、もちろん。私はただ、皆が望む快適な暮らしに必要なものの1つよ。実際、誰だって、どこに住んでいたって、1つぐらいは私を持っているわね。2つ持っている人もいるわ！
人間がどれほど前から私たちに頼ってきたのか、正確なことは知りません。おそらく先史時代からね、本当よ！想像できるかしら？かわいそうな先史時代の男性や女性が、肌寒い洞穴の中で、木の葉や草をかき集めて、あるいは・・・動物の毛皮で少しでも寝心地をよくしようとしているのを。もちろん、今の私たちは木の葉よりもっとよい材料でできているわ。私自身は、カバーはシンプルなコットンだけど、中身はスペースシャトルで使うために発明された、最先端の発泡樹脂でできています。とにかく、私の入っていた箱にそう印刷されていたのよ。もっと昔ながらのきょうだいには、羽毛が詰められています。ほかには、発泡樹脂の粒とか、ファイバーわたとか。大麦の粒の場合もあるわ！柔らかくて、でもちょっと硬さもあるものね。
だけど真面目な話、もうベッドから起きる時間じゃない？まあ、今日は土曜だし、あなたはかなり仕事が大変だったのよね。もう少し私に頭を預けて、休んでいてもいいわよ。ただねぇ、いびきをもう少し抑えてよ。本当に・・・。
