今月からは、シンガーソングライターで数々の J-POP の歌詞英訳も手掛ける、ネルソン・バビンコイさんによる全3回のレクチャーが始まります。「文化通訳」とはどのような仕事なのかについて知ることができます。
米津玄師、SEKAI NO OWARI、THE BAWDIES、ゲスの極み乙女。などの英語詞や英訳詞に携わるネルソンさんが、日本語の歌詞を英訳する際に大切にしていること、またどのように日本語を勉強してきたかについて教えてくれています。
今月の英作文はどんなことを書く？

③日本語の曲を英語に翻訳するのは難しいと思いますか？なぜですか？
Do you think it is hard to translate Japanese songs to English? Why?
I believe that it is really difficult to translate Japanese lyrics into English. A direct translation doesn’t make sense because of the following reasons:First, the most obvious difference between English and Japanese is “sentence structures”. Japanese sentences are formed as follows : Subject - Object - Verb (SOV), whereas English sentences are composed by Subject - Verb - Object (SVO). In Japanese, verbs are at the end of a sentence. On the other hand , in the English language, the subject and verb are typically positioned at the start of a sentence. To summarize , due to numerous grammar rules, translating from one language to another is difficult.
Second, there is a lack of subject pronouns in the Japanese language. The subject of a sentence is explicitly stated in English. Whereas in Japanese, the subject is often omitted, and you need to assume the subject by looking at the context .
In addition , there is a lot of Japanese vocabulary with no English translations; there are a lot of words that do not have an equivalent English word. So we have to come up with figurative language or close approximations, and that gets in the way of proper , accurate translation.
For these reasons, it is really difficult to translate Japanese songs to English.
