French Bulldog Becomes Most Popular US Dog Breed
For the first time in over 30 years, the US has a new favorite dog breed, according to the American Kennel Club.
The club announced on March 15 that the French bulldog was the nation's most popular purebred dog in 2022, taking the top position from the Labrador retriever after a record 31 years.
The AKC's popularity rankings cover about 200 breeds. Last year the top 10 breeds were: French bulldogs, Labrador retrievers, golden retrievers, German shepherds, poodles, bulldogs, Rottweilers, beagles, dachshunds and German shorthaired pointers.
English foxhounds were the least popular.
The AKC's data is based on nearly 716,500 dogs registered last year — about 1 in every 7 of them a French bulldog.
French bulldogs — often called Frenchies — were not even in the AKC's top 75 breeds just 25 years ago, but have quickly become popular in recent years. This is partly because of social media and famous owners like Leonardo di Caprio, Lady Gaga and Megan Thee Stallion.
Patty Sosa of the French Bull Dog Club of America says that Frenchies are "comical, friendly, loving little dogs," and explains that they do not need as much care or exercise as some other breeds.
However, some people are worried by the breed's rise in popularity. A recent study of around 24,600 dogs in Britain suggested that Frenchies often have "much poorer" health than other dogs, largely because of their flat faces.
Because of such health problems the British Veterinary Association recommends people do not buy flat-faced breeds, such as Frenchies, and the Netherlands has banned breeding very flat-faced dogs.
The AKC says that before buying purebred Frenchies, people should research breeders' history and health testing.

stay
犬を服従させるための重要なコマンドで、犬のしつけに使われます。次の指示があるまで動かずにその場に留まるよう指示するものです。
I was worried Rex would run onto the street, but he listened when I told him to stay.
レックスが道路に飛び出してしまうかもしれないと心配していたのですが、待てと言ったら言うことを聞いてくれました。
roll over
愛犬に教えられる芸の中には、面白いものがたくさんあります。たとえば、仰向けになってお腹を見せてほしいのであれば、roll over と言います。
My dog is full of energy and knows lots of tricks, like rolling over.
私の犬は元気いっぱいで、「ゴロン」など、たくさんの芸を覚えています。
fetch
ボールやおもちゃを投げて犬に取って来させたいなら、 fetchという言葉を教えます。
My dog loves playing fetch when we go to the park.
私の犬は、公園で投げたボールを取りに行く遊びをするのが好きです。
shaggy
犬の毛が長くて太く、ぼさぼさとして整っていない様子を表す語です。shaggyな毛を持つ犬種としては、オールド・イングリッシュ・シープドッグやビアデッド・コリーなどが知られています。
Growing up, I had a shaggy dog with dark eyes and a cute button nose.
幼いころ、黒い目と丸くてかわいい鼻の、毛がぼさぼさな犬を飼っていました。
floppy ears
耳が立っているのではなく、垂れ下がっている状態を表す単語です。シーズー、ビーグル、コッカースパニエルなど、多くの犬種がfloppyな耳をしています。
Coco's floppy ears bounced up and down as she ran through the park.
公園の中を走り回っているとき、ココの垂れ耳は上下に揺れていました。
いかがでしたか。一言では日本語に訳しづらい単語も登場しましたね。例文中に登場した以下のような表現も、覚えておくとよいでしょう。

- Growing up, ...（幼いころ、……）
会話例
今回学習した表現が、実際の会話の中でどのように使えるのかを見てみましょう。CarlyはAlexの犬・ Cooperを公園で見かけたようですが……
Carly: I think I saw your dog at the park today! He was playing fetch with a tall, dark-haired woman. I was wondering if you were there too.
Alex: Hmm, that can't have been Cooper. He's been at home with me all day.
Carly: That's strange. I could have sworn it was him. It was a brown dog, with shaggy fur and floppy ears.
Alex: That does sound like Cooper. Perhaps he's got a sibling I don't know about.
Carly: Could be! The dog was very well-behaved too. The woman was giving commands like "stay" and "roll over," and it was doing them perfectly.
Alex: Definitely not Cooper, then! He's a great dog but he's not the most obedient. He still struggles with "sit."
Carly: Well, he's still quite young, so I'm sure he'll get more obedient with time. Perhaps his long-lost sibling can teach him a few tricks!
カーリー： 今日公園であなたの犬を見かけた気がするわ。背の高い黒髪の女性と一緒にボール投げをして遊んでたの。あなたもいたんじゃないかと思うんだけど。
アレックス：うーん、それはクーパーなわけないよ。一日中僕と一緒に家にいたからね。
カーリー： おかしいなあ。絶対クーパーだと思ったのに。毛が長くてボサッとした、耳の垂れた茶色い犬だったのよ。
アレックス：それはクーパーみたいだね。実は兄弟がいたのかもね。
カーリー： そうかもね！ あと、その子はとてもお利口だったの。その女性は「待て」とか「ゴロン」みたいな指示を出してたんだけど、完璧にこなしていたよ。
アレックス：じゃあ絶対クーパーじゃないね！ クーパーはいい子なんだけど、いまひとつ言うことを聞かないんだよ。まだ「お座り」に苦労してるんだもん。
カーリー： まあ、まだ小さいんだし、きっとこれからもっと言うことを聞くようになるよ。もしかしたら、生き別れの兄弟が芸を教えてくれるかもね。
いかがでしたか。「会話に役立つ表現」で紹介したものだけでなく、会話の中に登場したobedient（従順な）、well-behaved（行儀のよい）といった表現も使えそうですね。犬には関係がありませんが、That's strange.（おかしいなあ）、Could be.（そうかも）、Definitely not ~.（絶対に～じゃない）などもさまざまな場面で使える表現なので、合わせて覚えておきましょう。
