コロナ禍による渡航制限、移動制限も徐々に緩和されつつあり、そろそろ海外旅行がしたい！と考えている人も多いのではないでしょうか。海外旅行の楽しみの一つが飛行機。日本の航空便は時間に正確なことで有名ですが、それでも時には遅延や欠航といったトラブルに遭遇することがあるかもしれません。

Japan's ANA, JAL Among Most Punctual Airlines in 2022
Japan's two largest carriers have kept their places among the world's most punctual airlines in 2022.
All Nippon Airways (ANA) was the most punctual of the world's 20 largest airlines by flight volume, according to airline analysts OAG. Japan Airlines (JAL) was in second place.
Many flights in the US and Europe were delayed or canceled as airports and airlines seriously underestimated the number of people who would want to travel again in 2022. But OAG's John Grant noted that global airline punctuality is now returning to what it was before the coronavirus pandemic.
OAG's data showed 88.8% of ANA flights and 88.1% of JAL flights arrived no more than 15 minutes later than scheduled in 2022.
However, ANA and JAL were sixth and seventh on OAG's list of all airlines, which was led by the smaller Garuda Indonesia. Garuda had 95.6% of flights arriving on time, although the airline flies to only about half as many destinations as ANA or JAL, according to data from FlightConnections.
The two Japanese airlines were second and third in another punctuality report from airline analysts Cirium.
Brazilian carrier Azul, which has over 150 destinations inside Brazil — but only a few internationally — was top of Cirium's list. On OAG's list, Azul was fourth among large airlines, and 11th among all airlines globally.
Tokyo's Haneda was the world's most on-time airport in 2022, Cirium said, with 90.3% of its over 370,000 flights departing on time, and 89.2% arriving on time.

grounded
この単語は、メンテナンスや安全上の問題、悪天候などさまざまな理由によって一次的に離陸許可が出なくなっている状態を表します。離陸できない飛行機は航空便の遅延や欠航の原因となるので、乗客にとっては迷惑ですね。
All flights in the area have been grounded due to the snowstorm.
（吹雪のため、この地域のすべての便が離陸できません）
turbulence
大気中の空気の急激で予測不可能な動きを意味する言葉で、飛行中に飛行機が揺れたり、跳ねたり、落ちたりする原因となります。turbulence（乱気流）は、乗客にとって非常に不快で、恐怖を感じることもあります。
The flight attendant assured us that the turbulence was nothing to worry about.

layover
layoverは、飛行機で移動する際に途中の空港に立ち寄ることを表します。このとき数分から数時間の待ち時間があり、飛行機から降りて足を伸ばしたり、時には別の飛行機や航空会社に乗り換えたりすることもできます。
I have a 6-hour layover in Singapore before my final flight to Melbourne.

connecting flight
connecting flight とは、最初の出発地とは別の空港から出発する便のことです。例えば、東京からエジンバラへ行く場合、まず東京からロンドンまで飛び、そこからロンドンからエジンバラへ行くconnecting flight（乗り継ぎ便）を利用することがあります。
We'll fly from Narita to Heathrow, then our connecting flight will bring us to Edinburgh.
（成田からヒースローまで飛んで、乗り継ぎ便でエジンバラまで行きます
jet lag
複数のタイムゾーンを行き来する際に、一時的に起こる睡眠障害のことをjet lag（時差ぼけ）と言います。身体が新しいタイムゾーンに適応できず、体内時計と現地時間のズレが生じて、疲労感や方向感覚のズレを引き起こすこともあります。
I had such bad jet lag when I got to Ireland. I kept waking up in the middle of the night!
（アイルランドに行ったとき、時差ぼけがひどかったんだ。夜中に何度も目が覚めたよ！）
会話例
今回学習した表現が、実際の会話の中でどのように使えるのかを見てみましょう。旅行のときのトラブルについて話しているようですよ。
Sam: Hey, it looks like our plane has been grounded in New York because of the bad weather, so we'll be taking off an hour or two later than scheduled.
Jennifer: Oh shoot! Does that mean we'll miss our connecting flight?
Sam: It's possible. Our layover is only 3 hours, so we'll definitely be cutting it close.
Jennifer: Damn! Fingers crossed that we make it on time!
Sam: I know what you mean. I'm just hoping we don't experience any turbulence if the weather stays bad. It's the last thing we need right now.
Jennifer: I'm sure we'll be fine. If I were you, I'd be more worried about jet lag! We are traveling across multiple time zones after all!
Sam: Good point! I totally forgot about that! I'll make sure to drink plenty of water and will try to catch some Z's on the plane so that I can hit the ground running once we arrive!サム： ねえ、悪天候で飛行機がニューヨークで離陸できないみたいで、僕たちの離陸も予定より1～2時間ほど遅れるようだよ。
