Lee, representing the Democratic Party, secured 49.4% of the vote, defeating conservative rival Kim Moon-soo, who garnered 41.2%. Voter turnout reached 77.8%, the highest since 1997.

In his inaugural address, delivered on June 4 at the National Assembly in Seoul, President Lee emphasized the need for pragmatic diplomacy. He expressed his commitment to reopening dialogue with North Korea and strengthening alliances with both the United States and Japan.

At home, Lee pledged to tackle economic inequality, youth unemployment, and rising housing prices. He also urged bipartisan cooperation to heal the rift between the ruling People Power Party and his own Democratic Party — a divide that intensified after the 2022 election and was deepened by the controversy surrounding Yoon’s declaration of martial law. Lee suggested that his administration would seek transparency, accountability and the restoration of public trust in government.
