「❶Life’s a Beach」

Will you look at this perfect day? The sky is clear, it’s warm, and the sun is ❷sparkling on the water. I just can’t wait to get out there! What is my owner waiting for? I want to get as much time in the water as I can before summer is over. I mean, once that happens, I get ❸locked up in a ➍shed all winter. And that’s no fun at all.

I’m built for fun. I mean, it’s pretty much my only purpose in life. When my owner and I are together, he’s always got a big ➎grin on his face. I’ve got brothers and sisters who have more serious jobs, I suppose. Actually, if you look ➏way down the shore, you can see one of my brothers sitting there next to the lifeguard, waiting for an emergency. Sometimes if a surfer is in trouble out there, he’s the best one to help. ➐After all, he’s ➑sleek and ➒nimble, and built for speed just like me. But, personally, I’d hate to just sit there all day waiting for something bad to happen. What’s the fun in that?

I suppose I have to admit it — I don’t make everyone smile. The truth is there are a few people on this beach that hate me. They complain that I’m too loud, too noisy. They say I ➓ruin the sounds of the beach. But it’s not like I can help it. When you’ve got a powerful gasoline engine inside like I do, you ⓫can’t help but make some noise. And ... when my owner ⓬straddles my seat with his girlfriend ⓭holding on behind him, and they ⓮roar out into the water — laughing and shouting, and jumping over the waves — they make almost as much noise as I do!

「人生は楽しいことだらけ」

この完璧な日を見てくださいよ？空は澄み渡り、暖かくて、太陽は水の上でキラキラしています。あっちに出ていくのがもう待ち切れません！ご主人は何を待ってるのかな？僕は夏が終わるまでに、できるだけ多くの時間を水の中で過ごしたいのに。つまりですね、ひとたび夏が終わってしまうと、冬の間中、僕は物置に閉じ込められるんですよ。それって全然楽しくありませんからね。

僕は楽しみのためにできています。つまり、それが僕が生きる上での、ほぼ唯一の目的なんです。ご主人と僕が一緒にいるとき、ご主人はいつもとびっきりの笑顔です。僕にはきょうだいがいるんですが、彼らはもっと深刻な仕事をしているんじゃないかな。実際に、岸のずっと先の方を見ると、きょうだいの一人が監視員の隣に座って、緊急時に備えて待機しているのが見えます。時々、もしサーファーがあそこで事故に遭うことがあれば、救助にはきょうだいが最も適任です。なんてったって、彼はスマートですばしっこくって、まさに僕みたいに、スピードを出すように作られていますから。だけど個人的には、悪いことが起こるのを待ちながら、日がな一日あそこでただ座ってるのも嫌だろうな、と思いますけどね。そんなことをしていて、何が楽しいのかな？

認めざるを得ないでしょう─僕は、誰をも笑顔にできるわけじゃないんです。実を言うと、僕を嫌う人がこのビーチに2、3人はいます。彼らは、僕の音が大き過ぎる、うるさ過ぎる、ということが不満なんです。僕のせいでビーチの音が台無しになるんだとか。でも、それは僕がどうこうできるようなことではないんですよ。僕みたいに、体内に強力なガソリンエンジンを持っていると、音を立てずにはいられません。それに・・・ご主人が僕の座席にまたがって、彼の後ろにガールフレンドがつかまって、2人で水に向かって大声で叫び─笑ったり叫んだり、波の上をジャンプしたりするとき─僕とほとんど同じくらい騒がしいんですよ！
