大みそかのカウントダウンは、世界中のさまざまな場所で異なる形で祝われます。豪華なイベントに参加したり、自宅で静かに新年を迎えたり、または友人たちとにぎやかにパーティーを楽しんだり・・・。

カウントダウンの過ごし方は人それぞれ。お祝いの仕方には正解はありません。大切なのは、その瞬間を大切な人々と共に過ごし、新年への喜びを分かち合うことです。

New Year’s Eve is marked in countries all over the world, in many different ways. In the United States, the most well-known celebration is in New York’s Times Square, which has been the location of a “ball drop” for over 100 years.

The ball has a diameter of almost 4 meters and is covered in brightly lit crystals. At one minute before midnight, the ball is slowly lowered down a pole that is more than 20 meters high, to reach the roof of the building below at precisely midnight.

The event starts in the early evening, when the ball is raised to the top of the pole, and live performances continue throughout the evening, as spectators are handed out party items such as balloons and hats. In recent years, John Lennon’s song “Imagine” has been played a few minutes before midnight, followed by a famous, inspirational or significant person or group of people chosen to officially initiate the ball drop by pressing a button – although in reality the drop is controlled elsewhere. At the exact moment that the ball reaches the roof of the building, on the stroke of midnight, fireworks are set off, and 1,400 kilograms of confetti is thrown over Times Square by 100 volunteers standing on the rooftops of nearby buildings.

Other cities in the United States host New Year’s Eve celebrations that involve dropping an object as part of the countdown to midnight. For example, in Brooksville, Florida, a giant tangerine is dropped in recognition of the area’s citrus industry; in Eastport, Maine, a giant sardine is dropped in honor of the area’s fishing industry; and in Macon, Georgia, a cherry-blossom-themed ball is dropped to represent the International Cherry Blossom Festival that is annually held in the city.
