「Winter Chemistry」
It certainly is cooler outside. Did you know that’s because the ➊earth’s axis is ➋tilted and this time of year the ➌Northern Hemisphere is pointed away from the sun? That’s the long way of saying, well, it’s winter. And cold! And you’re going to need me.
You don’t need me for my excellent knowledge of science, but I think I could probably teach you a thing or two anyway. It’s kind of ➍my thing. Especially the science of heat and cold.
Take me, for example. I mean, I’m pretty much room temperature at the moment, but that’s only because my inside chemistry hasn’t started working yet. What chemistry, you ask? Well, that’s an excellent question! Now, since I am one of the earliest designs of my kind — and invented in Japan, ➎I might add! — I work by a kind of ➏chemical reaction. Inside of this papery skin, I ➐am made up of several substances, including ➑finely ground iron, salt, ➒activated carbon and something called ➓vermiculite. Sounds complicated, doesn’t it? But the most important ⓫ingredient that I need in order to work is ⓬oxygen. That’s right! ⓭Good old air. And, unfortunately, that’s why I am ⓮currently encased in this ⓯gaudy ... plastic ⓰wrapper.
However, if my owner should ... decide that he needs my services ... all he would have to do is open this package, give me a little shake, and all those things will come together, causing me to warm right up. From there, he’ll probably put me in his gloves or pockets. But, of course, he can put me anywhere he wants to feel a little bit warmer.
Unfortunately, unlike some of my newer relatives, I ⓱only get one shot at this. After that, all my energy is spent. But I know one thing for certain: I can’t wait to get out of this wrapper and bring a little heat into the world!

「冬の化学反応」
外は間違いなく寒いだろうね。理由をご存じかな？何しろ地軸が傾いているので、この時期の北半球は太陽から離れた方を向いている。遠回しな言い方だが、つまり冬だ。だから寒い！そして私が必要になる。
私が科学の優れた知識をひけらかすまでもないが、1 つ、2 つ、お教えできると思う。何しろ、私がちょっと得意なこと、中でも熱と寒さの科学のことだから。
例えば、私だ。というのは、今はちょうど室温と同じだが、それは私の中の化学反応がまだ始まっていないからだ。どのような化学反応かとお尋ねかな？ふむ、それはいい質問だね！私は最も初期に設計されたタイプなので─しかも日本で発明されている！─化学反応の一種で機能するのだよ。この紙の膜の中は、複数の物質、細かい鉄粉や、塩、活性炭、それからバーミキュライトと呼ばれるものなどで構成されている。複雑そうだろう？といっても、私が機能するために必要な最も重要な成分は、酸素だ。そう！昔ながらの空気だ。そして残念ながら、そのために私はこの安っぽい・・・プラスチックの包装に包まれている。
ところがだ。ご主人が・・・私のサービスが必要と判断したら・・・この包装を開けてちょっと私を振ればいい。それですべてが混ざり合って、すぐに私は温まる。ご主人はそれからおそらく、私を手袋かポケットの中に入れる。だけどもちろん、ちょっと温めたいところならどこにでも入れることができる。
残念ながら、私の新しい一部の親戚筋とは異なり、これができるのは一度きりなのだ。その後、私のエネルギーはすべて使い果たされてしまう。しかし、一つだけ確かなことがある。私はこの包装から外に出て、世の中に少しでも温かさをもたらすのが待ちきれないんだ！
