連載「日本語スラング採集記」では、マッコーリー大学講師で日本語の研究をしている言語学者のウェス・ロバートソン先生が、日本語のスラングや若者言葉のあれこれを英語で解説し、日本の文化について考察していきます。この記事で取り上げるのは「リンクコーデ」「プチプラ」。今回はファッション系スラングについて考察します。
「リンクコーデ」：気軽で楽しいファッショントレンド
リンクコーデとは、ペアルックとシミラールックの中間に位置するコーディネートのことを指します。
「ペアルック」とは文字通りの「お揃い」であり、シミラールックとは雰囲気ベースの「合わせ」のことを指します。対してリンクコーデとは、2つ（以上）のコーディネートが、なにか同じもの1つでつながっていることを指します。それは色であったり、柄であったり。あるいは、2人が1つの同じアイテムを持っているなどすれば、それはリンクコーデとなります。
この新しいファッショントレンドは、ペアルックよりも難易度が少し低く、目立ちにくいものでありながら、パートナーや友人とのコーディネートの楽しさも十分あります。リンクコーデという言葉は、基本的にシミラールックとほぼ同時期に登場し、現在ではほぼ同じくらいの人気を共有しています。
コーディネートを「リンク」させる方法はたくさんあります。次の画像では、ブルーとサンドブラウンでコーディネートをリンクさせていますが、それぞれはまったく異なるコーディネートです。
また、似たようなアイテムを1つ身につけるだけで、それがどんなに小さくても、まったく異なる2つの服装をリンクさせることができます。
また、全体的な配色の一致を基本とするリンクコーデもあります。この次の画像の服には、隣に立っているキャラクターと共通するアイテムはありませんが、それでも雲のモチーフや「白と青」のスタイルがそれぞれの服装をうまく調和させていると感じられます。

The phrase リンクコーデ (link coordination) refers to an act of fashion coordination that sits somewhere between a ペアルック and a シミラールック.
While a ペアルック is literal matching, and a シミラールック is vibe-based matching, a リンクコーデ are two separate outfits connected by one thing that is the same. This can be color, pattern, or even literally just both outfits having one of the same items as part of their overall construction.
As a result, this new fashion trends are a bit less difficult and conspicuous than ペアルック yet still keep what’s fun about coordinating outfits with your partner/friends. The term リンクコーデ basically co-exists with シミラールック、 appearing about the same time and now sharing about the
same popularity.As mentioned, there’s lots of ways you can “link” your coordination. Color is obviously a simple choice, as you can see here: the blues and sandy browns (by the way, I’m colorblind, so don’t email me if you disagree with my labels please) link the outfits, but they certainly are all very different outfits.
You can also just wear one similar item – no matter how small – to link two very different outfits.
There’s also リンクコーデ which is based around matching via overall color scheme. This next poster’s clothes don’t have cloud motifs or any other clearly shared item with the character they are standing next to, but they nevertheless feel that the “white/blue” style makes both outfits vibe well, and clearly that vibe is a bit more pronounced than what we saw with シミラールック.
プチプラ：「小さい」と「値段」を組み合わせた言葉
プチプラとは、価格が安いものを指す俗語で、特にメイクアップ、アクセサリー、香水など、主に女性をターゲットにしたファッションアイテムに対してよく使われます。プチ（小さい）とプライス（値段）を組み合わせた言葉です。
重要なのは、プチプラは「品質が悪い」という意味での「安い」という意味ではないということです。低価格というのはここでは常に肯定的な意味で言われます。とはいえ同時に「ああ、実はプチプラなんだ」というような、謙遜の意味で使われることもあります。
このフレーズは少なくとも2010年から使われており、今でもかなり一般的です。上のツイートのように、アイテムを指す名詞として使われることが最も多いです。また「プチプラで」という表現もよく使われます。例えば、化粧品に関する以下のツイートには、「プチプラで化粧品への購買意欲をなくした」と記されており、3点を合計2,000円以下で手に入れたことを「プチプラの中のプチプラ」と表現しています。
英語の原文
プチプラ is a slang term used to refer to things that are cheap, especially items traditionally aimed at women or women’s fashion like make up, accessories, perfume, and the like. The term is a combination of プチ (small) and プライス (price).
Importantly, プチプラ doesn’t mean “cheap” in the sense of “low quality”. The low price here is always a positive, although it can be used in a somewhat “oh, it’s actually プチプラ” humble-brag sense.
The phrase has been used since at least 2010, and is still quite common. Most regularly, it is used as a noun referring to the items, as in the above tweet. The phrasing プチプラで is also frequently used. For example, the tweet below about cosmetics notes that they “got rid of their desire to buy cosmetics via プチプラ”, describing getting 3 items for less than 2,000 yen total as “プチプラの中のプチプラ (puchipura even for puchipura)”.
