「➊Off to the Races」
All right people, ➋rev up your engines. The competition is fierce, but we can do this.
And we’re off! … I said, “we’re off!” Hey! ➌Pick up the pace, will ya? Oh, no. I’ve managed to get a ➍Sunday driver, and it’s not even Sunday! Don’t you have a list, lady? A time limit? Surely you’ve gotta pick up the kids in half an hour, right? ➎Great. She’s taking her time.
OK, I admit it. We’re not really in a race, but who wouldn’t want to have a ➏roaring engine and a ➐sleek, shiny body? Maybe red, what do you think? I gotta ➑keep myself entertained somehow, right? I mean, it’s kinda hard to get excited about your work when you’re basically a big metal cage with four wheels ➒welded on. And right now, my only engine is a 35-year-old woman with nothing better to do than stare at the dog food.
Oof! Whoa, lady. That’s one ➓hefty bag of dog food! You got some arms on ya, I’ll ⓫give you that. But I can take it. That’s what I’m built for. What’s next, huh? Extra-large laundry detergent? A 12 pound turkey? Pile it in! Yeah, that’s right! Now, pass that ⓬old slowpoke with the hand-basket! And that lady with the kids there, too. Now ⓭we’re cooking with gas! Around the corner, and into Aisle 10 — we’re almost at the finish line … Ah, fine, I mean, the checkout line. Come on! Push me like you mean it! No! Don’t stop for the chocolate bars — you’re ⓮getting distracted here! Aaaaand … Yes! The cash-register rings and the crowd goes wild!
Well, no. But, hey, a guy can dream, can’t he?
Tell you what, lady — I’ll help you get these groceries over to your car — then, you drop me off with my buddies. Ah, maybe next time I’ll get a driver with a little more ⓯pep, know what I mean?

さあ、みんな、エンジンの回転数を上げて。熾烈（しれつ）な競争だが、俺たちならやれるぞ。
さあ、発進！・・・「発進！」って言ってるんだ！おい！スピードを上げろよ？やれやれ、やっとつかまえたのがサンデードライバーか。しかも日曜日でもないのに！リストはお持ちでないですか、奥さん？制限時間は？きっと、30分後にはお子さんを迎えに行くんですよね？参ったな。ゆっくり見て回る気だ。
わかったよ、認めるよ。本当にレースに出ているわけじゃないけれど、でも、うなりを上げるエンジンや、流線型のつややかなボディを欲しがらないやつなんているかい？赤なんかどうだい？俺だって、自分で何とか楽しまなくちゃならないだろ？つまり、自分が実際は4つの車輪が溶接された大きな金属のカゴだったら、仕事にわくわくするのはちょっと難しいんだ。しかも今、唯一のエンジンは35歳の女性で、ドッグフードを眺めることしかしないんだから。
うーん！おっと、奥さん。ずいぶん重いドッグフードの袋だ！大した腕だね、その点は認めよう。でも俺は運べるよ。そのために作られているんだから。次は何だ？特大の洗濯用洗剤かい？12ポンド（約5.4キログラム）の七面鳥？積んで、積んで！そう、そう！では、その手さげカゴを持った邪魔なのろまは抜いて！そしてそこの子ども連れの女性も。さあ、調子が出てきたぞ！コーナーを回って10番通路に入ると─ゴールは目前です・・・ああ、そうだよ、レジのカウンターのことだよ。さあさあ！本気で押して！だめだ！チョコレートの前で止まるな─ここは気が散るから！ さあーっ・・・やった！レジのベルが鳴り、観衆は大興奮です！
ああ、違うさ。だけど、夢ぐらい見たってかまわないだろ？
あのう、奥さん─この食料品を車まで運ぶのを手伝うから─その後、俺を仲間のところに置いていってくださいね。ああ、次はもうちょっと元気な運転手をつかまえるぞ、言いたいことわかるよね？
