「A Quiet Concert」
Yes. Wait, a little to the right. Yes. Perfect. Now, this garden will be my stage, where I can ➊sing my heart out for anyone who wants to listen.
I’m a ➋soloist, of course. But I suppose that you might ➌call the sound of the leaves, and the bird calls, and all the other noises of the outdoors my ➍accompaniment. But then, I’m not really the main act myself. Not really. I mean, while I might sing a few beautiful ➎trills or a single ➏note, ➐I'm meant to be the background to a relaxing — and my goodness, hot! — day, just like this one.
One of the things I love about my work is that I serve no other purpose than to make people happy and relaxed. And that's all that my kind have ever done. Some of us are made of wood, like bamboo. Some of us are made of ➑delicate glass. I even have a few odd cousins who are made of ➒sea-urchin spines, ➓of all things! But I'm a fairly traditional type, made of metal — the kind they’ve made in Japan for! many years. ⓫Unlike some of my more ⓬showy siblings, I don't have long pipes that make different tones — just a single bell-shaped body hung by a string, and another string with a metal disk and a long bit of paper tied to the end.
What's the paper for? Well, I have an ⓭invisible partner in all my work. She simply arrives whenever she likes and encourages me to sing. Who? Why, the wind, of course! One might even say that if I'm the musician, she's the ⓮conductor. It's her invisible hand that guides my little ⓯pings and trills. And it's her ⓰lulls and ⓱gusts that decide when I’m silent and when I sing. For many people in Japan, my voice is the sound of summer!

「静かなコンサート」
そうね。ちょっと待って、もう少し右。そう。完璧よ。これから、この庭が私のステージです。ここなら、聞いてくれる皆さんのために心を込めて歌えるわ。
もちろん、私はソリストよ。でも、葉ずれの音や鳥の鳴き声、屋外のすべての音が私の伴奏といえるかもしれないわ。でもね、本当のところ、私自身も主役ではないの。厳密にはね。つまり、私が美しいトリルや単音を響かせるとしても、それは、ちょうどこんな日─まあ、なんて暑い日！─にリラックスしてもらうための裏方仕事なんです。
私がこの仕事を気に入っているのは、一つには、人をリラックスさせて幸せにすることだけが目的だからです。それこそ、私みたいなものが今までしてきたすべてですもの。私たちは、竹のような木製だったり、繊細なガラス製だったりします。いとこには風変わりなものもいて、事もあろうにウニのトゲでできているのよ！でも私はかなり伝統的なタイプで、金属でできています。日本で昔から作られているんですよ。きょうだいには、違う高さの音を出す長い管を何本も持っている目立ちたがり屋もいるけれど、私は違います。ひもから釣鐘が1つだけぶら下がり、そこから別のひもに円盤形の金属が通してあって、そのひもの先に細長い紙が結ばれています。
紙は何のためにあるかですって？実は、私には目に見えない仕事上のパートナーが常にいるんです。彼女はただ、いつでも好きなときにやってきて、私に歌うように促すの。誰だろうって？もちろん、風よ！私が演奏家なら、彼女は指揮者と言えるかもしれないわね。私の小さなピーンという音やトリルを指示するのは彼女の見えない手。そして、私がいつ静かにして、いつ歌うかを決めるのは彼女の凪（なぎ）や突風です。日本では多くの人にとって、私の声は夏の音なのです！
