連載「ネイティブスタッフのSmall Talk」では、アルクのカナダ人スタッフMargaret Stalkerが、日々のあれこれを英語エッセイで語ります。

今回のテーマは「父の日」。6月の第3日曜日が父の日とされており、今年は6月18日にあたります。日頃の感謝の気持ちをメッセージカードやお花などに込めて贈ってみるのはいかがでしょうか。

A Vital Role

I sure miss my dad.

He passed away nearly 13 years ago, but every Father’s Day is still a little painful to me. It’s a reminder that someone I loved dearly and who helped me so much is no longer in reach. This year, in Japan as well as in many other countries, the special day for honoring fathers falls on June 18. I will spend some of that day reflecting on happy memories.

When I was young, it kind of upset me that all the attention was on Mother’s Day. The importance of fathers was overlooked, and the holiday to celebrate them rather seemed like an afterthought. I greatly loved my mother, but it was my father who combed my hair and put it into two braids every morning. It was my father who spent all his free time playing with my siblings and me and helped us with our homework. It was my father who showed me what a real man is – someone with intelligence, integrity and a good sense of humor.

I know that dads in Japan are extremely busy, but they are still of great importance to the lives of their kids. They are like anchors.

父は13年近く前に亡くなりましたが、今もまだ父の日は毎年少しつらくなります。私が心から愛し、私を一生懸命支えてくれた人がもう手の届かないところにいることを思い出してしまうのです。今年は、日本も他の多くの国も、父親を称える特別な日は6月18日にあたります。その日は幸せな思い出を振り返りながら過ごしたいと思います。

私は若い頃、母の日ばかりが注目されることに少し憤りを覚えていました。父親の大切さが見落とされ、父親を祝う日は後付けのように思えました。私は母のことが大好きでしたが、毎朝私の髪をといて2本の三つ編みにしてくれたのは父でした。自由な時間を全てきょうだいや私と遊んで過ごし、宿題を手伝ってくれたのも父でした。本物の男とは何か――知性、誠実さ、ユーモアのセンスを備えた人であると示してくれたのも父だったのです。

日本のお父さんたちが非常に忙しいのは分かります。それでもやはり、子供の人生にとって父親は非常に重要です。父親というのは、心のよりどころのような存在なのです。

The Day’s Origin

The idea for Father’s Day is credited to Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington, whose father raised her and all her five siblings after their mother died. Inspired by the newly created Mother’s Day, Dodd wanted a similar day to honor her dad, William Smart. The first Father’s Day was celebrated on June 19, 1910, the month of Smart’s birthday. However, it took several decades for the day to gain nationwide recognition, and it didn’t become an official holiday until 1972.

Through time, the day seems to have lost a lot of its meaning, and it now seems another excuse for stores to sell more things. Beginning early in June, our computer screens and devices are hit with ads trying to get us all to buy clothing, smartphones, golf clubs, etc., for our beloved fathers.

父の日の由来

父の日の着想は、ワシントン州スポケーン在住だったソノラ・スマート・ドッドによるものです。彼女の父親は、母親亡き後、彼女と彼女の5人のきょうだいを育てました。新しく制定された母の日に触発されて、ドッドは父親のウィリアム・スマートを称える同じような日を作りたいと考えたのです。初の父の日は、1910年、父・スマートの誕生月である6月の19日に祝われました。しかし、この日が全国的に認知されるまでには数十年かかり、正式な祝日となったのは1972年になってからです。

時が経つにつれて、この日の意義はかなり失われていったようで、今では店がより多くの品物を売るための口実になっているように思えます。6月初旬から、私たちのパソコンの画面やデバイスは、愛する父親のために服やスマートフォン、ゴルフクラブなどを買わせようとする広告に見舞われます。

Red or White

Bold, tall and sturdy, the rose is the official flower for Father’s Day. Wearing a red rose indicates your father is living and wearing a white one means he has died. If you are lucky enough to be able to wear a red one, be sure to spend as much time as you can with your dad on his special day. And don’t forget to laugh at his jokes!

赤か、白か

大きく目立ち、背が高く丈夫なバラは、父の日のための正式な花です。赤いバラを身に着けるのは父親が健在であることを示し、そして白いバラを身に着けるのは父親が亡くなっていることを意味します。あなたが幸運にも赤いバラを身につけることができるなら、できるだけ多くの時間をお父さんと一緒に過ごしてください。それから、お父さんのジョークに笑ってあげることも忘れないでくださいね！

dad jokes

Ever wonder what “オヤジギャグ” would be in English? This phrase is very close! Dad jokes are corny, often pun-based jokes that fathers are known for telling, often eliciting groans from their audience.

「オヤジギャグ」は英語でなんて言うんだろう、と気になったことはありますか？このフレーズがとても近いですね！dad jokesは、くだらなくて、父親がよく口にする大抵駄じゃれを基にしたジョークのことで、聞いている人たちから度々不満の声が起こります。

sugar daddy

This refers to a rich, older guy who gives presents and money to a much younger woman. And a “sugar mama” is used to describe a woman, typically married, who gives financial support to a younger lover.

うんと年下の女性にプレゼントやお金を与える裕福な年配の男性を指します。また、sugar mamaは、年下の恋人に経済的な援助をする、通常は既婚の女性を表す言葉として使われています。

(something) is not your dad’s

This expression is used a lot in advertising to say that a certain product is very modern or it has been updated. It is no longer what your dad’s generation used. For example: “This is not your dad’s video game!”

この表現は、ある製品がとても現代的であること、または最新のものであることを表すために広告でよく使われます。それはもはや父親世代が使っていたものではないということです。例：「これは最新のテレビゲームです！（＝父親世代がやっていたテレビゲームではありません）」

daddy’s girl/boy

This phrase refers to a daughter or son who is particularly spoiled or cherished by their father.

父親から特に甘やかされたり大事にされたりしている娘・息子を指す言葉です。

dad bod

This is a lighthearted phrase that refers to a body shape that is slightly overweight or not as toned as it once was.

やや太り過ぎ、あるいは昔ほど引き締まっていない体型を指す、軽いノリの表現です。

father figure

A father figure is an older man whom a younger person loves and respects and is of great help to that person.

father figureとは、若い人に愛され、尊敬され、その人にとって大きな支えになる年上の男性のことです。
