さて、新緑が美しく、屋外で過ごすのが気持ちいい季節の5月。ゴールデンウィークも始まり、キャンプやバーベキュー、山登りや川遊びなどアウトドアで過ごされる方や、海外・国内旅行に行かれる方も多いのではないでしょうか。無事故で楽しく過ごせることが一番ですが、予期せず事故に遭ってしまうことも。世界的に使われる救難信号に「メーデー！」がありますが、5月には関係ないそうです。なぜメーデーというのでしょうか。

Magical May

May is such a lovely month – at least here in the Northern Hemisphere. The air feels fresh, the flowers are blooming, the birds are chirping ... May makes you feel happy to be alive. It feels like a time of new beginnings.

Perhaps that’s why there are so many weddings in May. But it wasn’t always that way. In fact, it was once considered the worst time of the year to get married! There is even a poem that says, “Marry in the month of May, and you’ll surely rue the day.” (That “rue” is kind of an old-fashioned word for “regret.” You don’t hear it much in conversation these days, but you will find it in books.) The origins for this superstition date back to Roman times, when May was the month of the Feast of the Dead. You were supposed to be paying your respects at that time – not happily getting married.

It has long been a superstition that it's very unlucky for British royals to get married in May, but Meghan Markle and Prince Harry tempted fate and tied the knot on May 19, 2018. But for us nonroyals, the only wedding advice for May is not to get married on Mother’s Day! Many countries, including Japan, celebrate mothers each year on the second Sunday in May.

5月はとても素敵な月です、少なくともここ北半球では。空気は清々しく、花は咲き乱れ、鳥はさえずり・・・。生きてて良かったと思える5月。新しい始まりの時のように感じます。

そんな理由で、5月には結婚式が多いのかもしれません。しかし、昔はそうではありませんでした。実は、かつては1年のうちで最も結婚に不向きな時期とされていたのです！「5月に結婚すると、きっとその日を後悔するだろう」という詩があるくらいです（この 「rue」は、「regret」を意味する古風な言葉です。最近の会話ではあまり耳にしませんが、本で目にすることがあります）。この迷信の起源はローマ時代にさかのぼり、5月は「死者の祭り」の月でした。その時期、あなたは敬意を払うべきであり、幸せな結婚をすべきではなかったのです。

イギリス王室には、5月に結婚するのは不吉だという迷信が長い間ありましたが、メーガン・マークルとヘンリー王子はその迷信を恐れず、2018年5月19日に結ばれました。しかし、王族ではない私たちにとって、5月に結婚することへの唯一のアドバイスといえば、母の日に結婚しないことです！日本を含む多くの国では、毎年5月の第2日曜日に母親をお祝いしています。

A Short Name for a Long Month

Is May the easiest month for you to pronounce? It only has three letters, and there are no r’s or l’s! The name’s origins are Latin – as are all the months of the year in an English calendar. But it is thought to be named after a goddess of fertility and growth who was actually Greek, not Roman, called Maia. She became identified with the Romans’ own fertility goddess, Bona Dea, whose festival was held in May. The Roman calendar started in March, so May was originally the third month of the year. The months of January and February were later added, moving May to the fifth month.

In Old English (the earliest recorded form of the English language), the name for the month was “primlice,” which translates into modern English as “the month of three milkings.” Seemingly, there was so much fresh grass in May that cows could be milked three times a day!

長い月に与えられた短い名前

5月は、あなたにとって最も発音しやすい月ですか？3文字しかありませんし、RもLもありません！英語のカレンダーにある1年の全ての月と同様、５月の名前の起源はラテン語です。しかしこの名前は、ローマ人ではなくギリシャ人の、豊穣と成長の女神マイアにちなんで付けられたと考えられています。マイアは、ローマの豊穣の女神ボナ・ディアと同一視されるようになり、その祭りは5月に行われていました。ローマ暦は3月に始まったので、5月は元々1年の3番目の月でした。その後、1月と2月が追加され、5月は5番目の月になりました。

古英語（最古のものとして記録されている英語）では、この月の名前は「primlice」で、現代英語では「3回の搾乳の月」と訳されています。5月には牧草が生い茂り、1日に3回、ウシの乳をしぼることができたようです！

A Little Trivia for You

In some countries, the first day of May is celebrated by putting up a tall maypole, decorated with flowers and ribbons, in the town square and dancing around it. In ancient times, the maypole would have been a living tree. One theory is that the tree represented masculine energy, and the ribbons and floral decorations represented feminine energy.

In any given year, no month ever begins or ends on the same day of the week as May does. For example, this year May 1 falls on a Monday and no other month does. Are you now checking your phone’s calendar?

Enjoy the month, and – to misquote a famous line from Star Wars – “May the 4th (force) be with you!”

どの年でも、5月と同じ曜日に始まる月も終わる月もありません。例えば、今年は5月1日は月曜日ですが、他の月がそうなることはありません。あなたは今、スマホのカレンダーをチェックしていますよね？

The first day of May is known as May Day, or International Workers’ Day, and is a public holiday in many countries around the world. This day commemorates the historic struggles and gains made by workers.

5月1日はメーデー、または国際労働者の日として知られ、世界の多くの国で祝日になっています。この日は、労働者による歴史的な闘争と利益を記念する日です。

Mayday!

You probably have heard this expression in the movies and TV dramas. Usually repeated three times, it is an international distress signal, most often used by aircraft and ships but also by the police and firefighters in some countries. It actually has nothing to do with the month of May but instead is the phonetic equivalent of “M’aidez!” – French for “Help me!”

映画やテレビドラマで「メーデー！」という表現を聞いたことがある方は多いのではないでしょうか。これは国際的な救難信号で、通常3回繰り返され、航空機や船舶がよく使うものですが、国によっては警察や消防士も使います。実は5月とはなんの関係もなく、「M'aidez!」の音訳なのです。フランス語で「助けて!」を意味します。

May-December Romance

This term refers to a romantic relationship where there is a drastic difference in age between the two participants. Usually, the man is the "December" (elder) and the woman is the "May" (younger), although it can definitely happen the other way around. You often see this happening in Hollywood, with famous, older actors getting together with women still in the “springtime” of their lives.

この言葉は、年齢がとても離れた2人の恋愛関係（歳の差恋愛）を指します。通例、男性が「12月」（年上）で女性が「5月」（年下）ですが、もちろん逆の場合もあります。ハリウッドでは、有名な年配の俳優が、まだ人生の「春」にいる女性と付き合うことがよくありますね。
