literally created oxygen out of the red planet’s thin air"> literally created oxygen out of the red planet’s thin air

MOXIE

live off the land

live off the landといえば、「その土地で採れた食べ物を食べて生きていく」ということ。

NASA rover extracts first oxygen from Mars

(1)NASA has announced yet another first on (2)Mars, Wednesday (April 21), having literally created oxygen out of the red planet’s thin air. That’s (3) thanks to an (4) experimental (5) device carried by the (6)six-wheeled (7)rover vehicle, called Perseverance, that landed there in February.

The (8)gadget is called MOXIE, and in its first (9)activation, it created 5 grams of oxygen from the (10)atmosphere of Mars, which is mostly (11)carbon dioxide. That’s enough for an (12) astronaut to breathe for 10 minutes. It may sound small, but that’s big news, (13) marking the first experimental (14)extraction of (15)natural resources from another planet that humans can directly use .

NASA says it’s the first technology of its kind that may help future (16)missions “live off the land” of another world. Oxygen is needed not only to see humans on Mars someday , it is also (17) crucial for the fuel to get them home.

MOXIE’s success comes a day after another (18)achievement on Mars ? with a (19) miniature robot helicopter, NASA (20)pulled off the first (21)controlled (22)powered flight of an (23)aircraft on another planet. (cReuters, April 22, 2021)
