On the 10th, the Federation of Electric Power Companies of Japan, which is composed of major electric power companies, called on households and companies to cooperate\ in conserving electricity due to demand outstripping supply. With the increased demand for electricity due to a wave of cold weather, fuel for power generation is in short supply , and the amount of power being generated is insufficient. The industry as a whole is calling for electricity to be conserved in an attempt to avert the risk of power outages.
Electric power companies in each region , such as TEPCO Holdings, also individually made calls on the same day. They call for saving power to an extent that does not interfere with daily living, and say that consumers may continue using heating on cold days. The calls have no legal basis and are simply independent requests from the electric power industry.
If electricity consumption does not match supply , it could lead to power outages. Currently , the demand for electricity for heating is rising , and the supply of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to be used as fuel for power generation is running low. Because of this lack of fuel, the thermal power generation output is being curtailed, and the amount of electricity supplied is insufficient . Due to harsh weather, the amount of solar power generated is also falling.
On the 8th, peak demand for electricity exceeded a scale only expected “ once every 10 years” in seven regions nationwide, including Kyushu and Hokuriku. The harsh weather is expected to continue going forward , possibly further increasing electricity demand .

大手電力で構成する電気事業連合会（電事連）は10日、電力需給のひっ迫を受け家庭や企業などに節電への協力を呼び掛けた。寒波による電力需要の増加で発電用燃料の在庫が減り、発電量が不足している。業界全体で節電を呼び掛けることで、停電のリスクを回避したい考えだ。
東京電力ホールディングスなど各地域の電力会社も同日、個別に呼び掛けた。生活に支障が出ない範囲での節電を呼び掛け、低気温の日における暖房の利用などは継続してもらう。今回の呼び掛けは法に基づくものではなく、あくまで電力業界として自主的に呼び掛けるものとなる。
電力は消費量と供給量が一致しないと停電につながる恐れがある。足元では暖房向けに電力需要が伸び、発電燃料の液化天然ガス（LNG）の在庫が 不足している。燃料不足が原因で火力発電の出力を抑えており、電力の供給量が足りなくなっている状況だ。悪天候で太陽光発電の発電量も落ちている。
8日には九州や北陸など全国7地域で、電力の最大需要が「10年に1度」と想定する規模を上回った。今後も悪天候は続く見通しで、電力需要がさらに増える可能性がある。

電力会社がひっ迫する電力需要への対応で節電を呼び掛けたというニュース。第1段落1文目のcall on ～ to …は「～に・・・するよう呼び掛ける、求める」という意味です。cooperate in conserving electricity（電力の節約に協力する）では、協力する内容を紹介するのに前置詞inを用いることにも注目しましょう。その後のdemand outstripping supplyも注目です。demand outstrips supplyという主語・動詞・目的語の関係がそのまま表現されていますが、この直前にdue toという前置詞があるために動詞がoutstrippingという形に変わっています。次の文のin short supplyでは、shortが持つ「不足している」というニュアンスがうまく使われています。
第2段落では、各電力会社からの要請について触れています。1文目のto an extent that ～は「～な程度まで」という意味です。日常生活に支障をきたさない程度に節電することを求めていることになります。
第3段落のto be used as fuelは直前のliquefied natural gas (LNG)を補足説明しています。この文の述部is running lowも注目です。runという動詞は後ろに主語を説明する形容詞が続いて「～の状態になる」という意味で使われることがあります。the amount of electricity suppliedのsuppliedは一語だけで直前の名詞electricityを説明していて「供給される電力」という意味です。
第4段落最後のpossibly further increasing electricity demand はその前の文の内容（厳しい 天気が続くこと）を意味上の主語として、補足説明を追加するパターンです。
