大学講師や翻訳家として活躍しているケイ・ヘザリさんに、アメリカ教育業界への新型コロナウイルスの 影響 についてお話をお伺いしてから早2カ月。8月になっても収束する気配が見えませんが、アメリカの教育業界では何か変化があったのでしょうか。ヘザリさんにお伺いしました。

Going Forward ">Plans Going Forward
That is the question on everyone’s mind right now, and there’s a (3)flurry of (4)contradictory answers. The U.S. president has demanded schools fully reopen and has threatened to (5)withhold federal money if they don’t. Last week, he claimed that children are “(6) virtually (7)immune” from (8)COVID and the virus will “go away” soon. In fact , data now show that in the last two weeks of July, close to 100,000 children in the U.S. tested positive for COVID.
Meanwhile , a majority of parents and teachers across the country are terrified to send kids back to school. And because the decision is up to local (9)school districts, there are many different plans going forward , both for universities and (10)K-12 districts. As of August 7, according to (11)the Chronicle of Higher Education, these are the numbers for universities: 21% of schools plan to open fully in person ; 5% fully online; 61% hybrid, a combination of online and in person ; and the rest undecided or some other method . As for K-12, many schools are also planning hybrid options and some will delay the start date for the fall term .

Work ?">But Will It Work ?
An interesting new concept of “(12)learning pods” has also (13)emerged in both higher and K-12 education. On college campuses, that means creating small groups of students who do everything together, from living in the same (14)dorm to socializing and attending classes. For K-12, it’s about organizing learning groups at people’s homes. Some hire (15)tutors or (16)certified teachers while others rely on parents to share the teaching.
The hardest part is none of these in-person plans can be counted on to work . Some schools that already reopened had to close within a week because multiple students tested positive for the virus . Colleges that plan to have students on campus with safety rules (17) in place still (18)have no control over student behavior outside the classroom. Young people want to be together and are unlikely to follow social distancing rules on their own.
最も難しい点は、これらの対面方式の計画のどれもがうまくいくとは期待できないことです。すでに再開していた一部の学校では、複数の生徒がウイルス検査で陽性となったために、1週間たたずに閉鎖しなければなりませんでした。構内における学生の安全規則の設定を計画している大学でも、教室の外での学生の行動についてはどうすることもできません。若い人たちは一緒にいたがり、社会的距離を取る規則を自ら守ろうとはしないでしょう。

Predictions
My prediction is that once schools reopen in whatever form , we’ll see another (19)surge of the virus and will have to shut down again. Until we have a vaccine, it’s unlikely that students and teachers can go back to school safely. Once we do have a vaccine though , I predict a lot of hugging.
