アメリカ大統領選挙は、多くのアメリカ人、そして世界中の人々の 予測 を裏切る結果となりました。この「世紀の番狂わせ」を、アメリカ人はどのように英語で表現したのか、SNSなどに流れた、切実な生の声を英語と日本語で見てみましょう。

信じられない、夢なら覚めて

OMG I am just beside myself. Somebody wake me up and tell me I was having a bad dream.
うそでしょ。絶望感でいっぱい。誰か私の目を覚まして、悪い夢だったと言って。(OMGは、Oh, my god.の略。 beside myself は「絶望感に襲われる」という意味。)

 

How has this happened? How can someone like Donald Trump become our president? I don't even know how to process this.
どうやってこんなことが起きたのか。どうしてドナルド・トランプのような人間が私たちの大統領になりえるのか。どうやってこのことを頭の中で 処理 すればいいのかすら分からない。

 

This is just so awful I hardly know what to do or say.
あまりにひどすぎて、どうしたらいいのか、何と言えばいいのか、分からない。

 

I'm dumbfounded by the outcome .
この結果に言葉を失っている。

 

In one day, everything I’d thought and hoped about the United States was proven wrong.

It's going to be difficult for many parents to explain to their kids how a man who regularly insults and belittles others is now the President.
他人をいつも侮辱し、けなす男が大統領だということを、なんと子どもたちに説明すればいいのか、多くの親たちが途方に暮れるだろう。

 

I have nieces and nephews. My hope has always been to leave the planet a tiny bit better when I leave than when I arrived. I can no longer fulfill that hopeful promise and it makes me very, very sad.

時代が逆戻り

I am in mourning for my country as we go backwards instead of forward .
進歩する代わりに後退したこの国を、嘆き悲しみます。

明日、時計の針を戻すことを忘れないで、2、300年前に。

(夏時間が終わる11月第一日曜日の明け方に、時計のを1時間戻したことに掛けている)

Brexitの再来

That's how I felt after Brexit.
イギリスがEU離脱したときと同じ気持ちだ。

 

America is being courteous by taking all of the attention off of the U.K. for Brexit.
アメリカはご親切にも、EUを離脱したイギリスから、世界中の注目をそらしてくれた。

 

Everyone thought the U.K. had the biggest screw-up of the year, but  America has a Trump card.
みんな今年はイギリスが最大のヘマをやったと考えていただろうけど、アメリカは奥の手を持っていた。

(screw-up は「失敗、へま、どじ」。Trump card とは「いざというときの奥の手、切り札」の意味で、もちろん、Donald Trumpと掛けている。)

 

Well , at least now the U.K. no longer holds the award for the craziest, most self-harming, hit-yourself-in-the-face nation.
まぁ、少なくとも今となっては、イギリスが「一番オバカで、自分で自分の顔を殴る自傷行為を一番やりがちな」国大賞ではなくなったわけだ。

 

Britain voted to leave Europe, America voted to leave America.

イギリスはヨーロッパを離れることに票を投じ、アメリカはアメリカを離れることに票を投じた。(マイケル・ムーア)

アメリカの危機

Everything that has been built up has been destroyed. America has failed.
今まで築いてきたものがすべて打ち砕かれてしまった。アメリカは失墜した。

 

9/11, move over for 11/9.
911は119に、その座を譲り渡した。

(アメリカ同時多発テロ事件が起きた9月11日と同じくらい、大統領選の結果が判明した11月9日はひどい、という意味。"11/9 is the new 9/11"という表現もある。)

 

I do not worry that a President Trump will nuke another country. I worry he will make so many Americans feel afraid in their own country.
トランプ大統領が他国を核攻撃することを 心配 しているのではない。私が 心配 なのは、おおぜいのアメリカ人が自分の国にいながらにして恐怖を感じることだ。

(デモなどで No Nukes! [核反対、あるいは原発反対]といったサインを掲げることもある。)

 

‘The KKK-backed candidate is a coin flip away from winning the presidency’ is not a sentence that should be true in 2016. Holy shit America.
「KKKに支持された 候補 が、硬貨の裏表で大統領の座を射止めようとしている」という一文は、2016年という時代に真実であってはならない。アメリカ、最低。

(白人至上主義団体のKKKは、トランプ当選の祝賀パレードをノースカロライナ州で行うと発表している。coin flip away とは「硬貨の裏表程度の僅差」。)

 

This ranks among the darkest days in American history. At this point , it may be too late to save.
この結果は、アメリカ史上、暗黒の日の最上位に入る。今となっては、手遅れだろう。

(too late to save は「手遅れである」。)

 

No country for old women. Or young ones now either .
アメリカは高齢女性のための国ではない。 そして今、若者のためのものでもない。

悲しみに暮れる女性たち

We are showing the rest of the world that we are apparently a nation with a majority of racist butts that hate women.
私たちは、国民の大半が女性を嫌っている人種差別主義者から構成される国だということを、世界中に公言することになってしまった。

(butt は俗語で「いやなやつ」の意味。)

 

8 years of a black president followed by a female president was too much of a threat to white male authority .
黒人の大統領の8年の治世の後に女性大統領が続くことは、白人男性の権力社会にとって、あまりに大きすぎる脅威だったのだ。

 

Hillary, you were far better than this country deserved. Perhaps God decided to save you from this electorate.

Americans google ‘how do I emigrate?’ as searches for ‘end of the world’ rise around the planet.
世界中で「世界の終わり」という検索が増える中、アメリカ人は「どうやって移住するか」とググっている。

 

Never before have Americans lived in a country so socially and geographically segmented.
これほど社会的に、地理学的に分断されたアメリカは、今までになかった。

segment は「分裂させる(する)」の意味。)

オバマを懐かしむ声

I might not agree with everything President Obama did, however he's very professional, uplifting and inspiring .
オバマ大統領がやったすべてに賛成するわけではないけれど、しかし彼は少なくともプロフェッショナルで、皆の気持ちを高揚させ、元気づけてくれた。

 

I have felt safe with Obama in power for the last 8 years; not anymore.
この8年間、オバマ政権下では 安心 していられたが、もはやそうではない。

Now Trump says he wants to ‘bind the nation's wounds’, wounds that he inflicted.
今やトランプは「国の傷をふさぎ」たいと言っている。彼が負わせた傷だ。

(bind a wound は「口を閉じる」。)

 

The truth is that America has gotten harder for working people. It is extraordinarily ironic that someone like Donald Trump would be seen as the champion of the working man.
アメリカは労働者にとって 厳しい 場所になったというのが真実だ。ドナルド・トランプのような人間が、働く者の擁護者だと見られているのは、きわめて皮肉だ。

(champion は「(人、主義などのために闘う)闘士、擁護者」のこと。)
