英語のニュースを読むのは好きだけど、読んだだけで終わってしまう。本当は、英語ニュースで知ったことについて、英語でいろいろ話してみたい！ そんな皆さんのために、英語のニュース記事を読み、その話題について英語で話すための表現やコツが学べる連載がスタートします。第1回となる今回は、「お酒」に関する表現をご紹介しましょう。
軽い飲酒によって外国語での会話のスキルが上がる可能性がある、という 研究報告 があります。でも、東京と大阪にできた新しいバーは、さらに一歩先を行っています。そこでは、英語で注文をした客にしかお酒を出してくれないのです。

英語ニュース
English Language Only Bars Open in Tokyo and Osaka
Two new bars have opened in Japan that help customers improve their English conversation skills — by banning the Japanese language. The new bars opened on October 1, 2022, in Tokyo and Osaka, and are receiving very positive reviews.
The new bars are both called "Sick!" and are designed to have a fun atmosphere where people can practice speaking English while enjoying a few drinks. First-time visitors don't need to worry about their
English ability, because the English-speaking bar staff will encourage them by chatting at their level.However, customers at Sick! are only allowed to speak English. If they speak Japanese, they will be shown a yellow card. After that, if they continue to speak Japanese, they have to buy an extra drink as a punishment.
Both bars have an all-you-can-drink system where customers pay for the time they spend in the bar. The Tokyo branch costs 3,000 yen — or around $20 — for 30 minutes, and the Osaka branch costs 1,500 > yen, or around $10.
Although this may look a little expensive for a few drinks, it does include English conversation practice that would cost as much or more at the average language school.
And the new bars' customers have been very happy. In a Google review of the Tokyo bar, one customer wrote that it was a fun place to speak English with friendly people.
And writing about the Osaka bar, another customer said they had not expected to have such a great time speaking English, and added that they can't wait to get drinks there again.

buy a round
多くの英語圏の国では、バーで友人と飲む際に、仲間全員にドリンクを1杯おごることがよくあります。これを go on rounds または buy a roundと言います。たいていは全員が順におごるので、最終的に全員平等になります。
I think it's my turn to buy this round.（次は僕がおごる番だね）
Dutch courage
数杯飲酒をして気が大きくなることを Dutch courage と言います。しらふではできないようなことをお酒の力を借りてするときなどにこの表現をよく使います。「外国語を話すこと」も当てはまりますね！ ちなみに、アメリカ英語では liquid courage とも言います。
I'll need a beer to give me some Dutch courage before asking Lily on a date.（リリーをデートに誘うには、ビールでも飲んで勢いをつけなくちゃ）
tipsy
tipsy は、ちょっとほろ酔い気分になることを表します。決して酔っぱらってしまうことではありません！ この表現は tip（物や人をひっくり返す）という動詞から来ています。もしかしたら、数杯飲むとあたりにある物をひっくり返したりしがちなことから来ているのかもしれませんね。
I'm not a big drinker, so I feel tipsy after just one beer!（私は大酒のみではないので、ビール１杯でほろ酔い気分になるの）
drink someone under the table
他の人たちよりもお酒に強いことを drink someone under the table と表現できます。あなたが酔いつぶれる前に、他の人たちが飲みすぎて座ったり立ったりしていることができなくなり、「テーブルの下に行ってしまう」ということから来ています。
I could always drink my friends under the table when we played drinking games in college!（大学で飲み比べをしたときは、僕はいつも友人たちを飲み負かしていたよ！）
hair of the dog
夜遊びをして二日酔いになったとき、お酒を飲んでそれを治そうと考えることがありますよね。それを日本語では「迎え酒」と言いますが、英語では hair of the dogと言います。
これは the hair of the dog that bit you（あなたを噛んだ犬の毛）を短くした表現で、狂犬病の犬に噛まれたときにその犬の毛を傷口に当てると治るという言い伝えから来ています。
どちらにも根拠はありませんが、多くの人がお酒、つまり最初にあなたを「噛んだ」ものを飲むことが、ひどい二日酔いの一番の治療法だと考えているのです。
I drank way too much last night… I think the hair of the dog is the only thing that will cure this headache!（昨晩は飲みすぎた・・・。この頭痛を治すには迎え酒しかないな！）
会話例
新しい表現を覚える際に最も難しいのは、会話のどこでその表現を使うか、ということかもしれません。ここでは、先ほどのニュースを読んだ2人による会話を例に、上で学んだ表現がどう使われるかを見てみましょう。
Yuko: Should we visit "Sick!" when we're in Osaka on Saturday?
Daisuke: I'm not sure. The idea of ordering in English makes me a little nervous!
Yuko: You'll be fine, I promise! I'll even order the first couple of rounds, to give you some Dutch courage!
Daisuke: That sounds good to me actually. I'd probably be confident enough to order for myself if I was a little tipsy — I'll just need to go home at a reasonable time.
Yuko: Well, we both know you could drink me under the table so I'm sure I'll want to go home before you!
Daisuke: That's true. I just can't afford to get a hangover; I've got to drive home on Sunday! So I won't be able to have the hair of the dog like last weekend.
ユウコ： 土曜日に大阪に行ったときに「Sick!」に行ってみようか？
ダイスケ： どうしようかな。英語で注文しなくちゃいけないっていうのがちょっと不安だなあ。
ユウコ： きっと大丈夫よ！ 最初の何杯かは私がおごってあげるから、それで勢いをつければいいのよ！
ダイスケ： それはありがたいね。ちょっとほろ酔いになれば、自分で注文する自信がつくかもしれない。適当な時間には帰らなくちゃいけないしね。
ユウコ： あなたが私を飲み負かすことができることはお互いわかってるから、きっと私の方が先に帰りたくなると思うわ。
ダイスケ： それはそうだね。日曜日には運転して帰らなければならないから、二日酔いにはなれないんだ。だから先週末みたいに迎え酒はできないよ。
