今月のテーマは「人々は外国語をどう学んできたのか」

言語学者の藤田保さんの「言語学習」をテーマとしたレクチャー第2回。今月は外国語の学習と指導の歴史に講義の焦点が当てられています。

外国語学習の歴史は長く、何千年も昔にまでさかのぼります。古代ローマ人はギリシャ人の哲学者の本を読むために、古代ギリシャ語を学んでいたと言われています。

最初は書物を読むことが外国語学習の目的であったため、「読む」ための外国語学習の中心でした。しかし19世紀末から移動手段が発達し、国や地域を超えた人々の交流が広がったことにより、「コミュニケーション」のための外国語学習という概念が生まれたそうです。

このように、今月のレクチャーでは外国語学習の歴史とその背景を知ることができます。歴史の中で、さまざまな英語学習法や教授法が生まれました。どの方法にも、それぞれに長所と短所があるため、１つの方法にこだわるのではなく、いろいろな方法を組み合わせて学習するのが効果的だと言われています。皆さんもレクチャーを通して、自分に合いそうな学習方法を取り入れてみてはいかがでしょうか。

Is studying grammar more important than practicing conversation?

Learning grammar without speaking is boring for many people because the reason for learning English is to communicate. However , learning only speaking without grammar limits how advanced you can get. You will likely become a lower intermediate level in speaking and much lower than that in writing. So in my opinion, there is no other way than to learn grammar if you really want to learn English and hold on to it for ages.
The purpose of grammar is that other people can understand you correctly. Applying the correct grammar (when you write or speak) is important to avoid misunderstandings, and to help the other person understand you easily. If your English is full of mistakes, you will slow down communication and conversations, and it will be harder to express your ideas and thoughts clearly and concisely.
In addition , learning grammar improves your English fluency. When you learn grammar, it is easier for you to know how to organise and express the ideas in your mind without difficulty. As a result , you will be able to speak, read and write English more fluently.
In conclusion , learning grammar is necessary and it is the most effective way to improve your English skills, but at the same time , you need to practice grammar as you learn, through speaking.
