今年、創刊50周年を迎える『ENGLISH JOURNAL』（EJ）。創刊当時から、ハリウッドスターや世界的なアーティスト、文化人の方々のインタビューを掲載してきました。そこには長い年月がたっても色あせない言葉があふれています。その中から今回は、時代が反映されている言葉や心に残る言葉をピックアップしてご紹介します。

2000年代

9・11同時多発テロやリーマン・ショック以降の経済的危機などで、アメリカの負のイメージが強く出た時代。長引く不況で「男は仕事、女は家庭」という性別による役割分業は非現実的となりました。

（U2の）ボノさんはスクリーン上に、1948年の国連の人権宣言を映し出したのです。そしてそこに書かれていたのは、基本的に、人は皆、仲間、兄弟であるということ、すべての人は、人種、皮膚の色、信条、宗教、性別にかかわらず、平等である―人は皆、本来そうあるべきであるとおり、互いに平等であり、その意味でも、尊重し合うべきである。そして私はただただ、「なんて素晴らしいメッセージなのだろう」と思ったのです。

2010年代

ネット社会がさらに成熟。スマホやSNSの爆発的な普及により、ライフスタイルが大きく変わった時代。政治面では紛争が絶えず、中東での大規模デモや内戦の勃発、ISILが勢力を伸ばすなど、事態は混迷化しました。

紛争の責任は、シリア国内で争っている当事者たちにあります。しかし、危機を悪化させているのは、国際社会における分裂と決断力のなさです。それが、安全保障理事会が責任を全うすることを妨げているのです。私たちのこの時代を定義するのは、危機そのものではなく、私たち国際社会がいかに力を合わせて危機に対処するかということでしょう。

2029年にはコンピューターが人知に追い付くと言いました。私が2029年と予測したとき、つまり1999年には、人々は私が戯言（たわごと）を言っていると思いました。今では、かなり妥当だと考えられています。2029年、コンピューターが人知の領域に追い付きます。人類と競い合い、取って代わるような競合勢力になるわけではありません。人類がより賢くなるのです。そのための技術革新です。
