「A Dusty Romance」
Hey. Hey! Look at me. Look at me-eee! Aren’t I all ➊nice and shiny? Don’t you just want to ➋bask in my shininess? Look, I know you can see me. OK, fine, you can’t hear me, I get that. I mean, ➌technically, I have a mouth, but it doesn’t exactly talk. I mean, bowls and cups have mouths, and I suppose I am partly a kind of cup. Wait — is that what I am to you now? Some kind of, like, ➍knickknack? I mean, surely you ➎think more of me than these ➏decorative ➐china plates and crystal swans your mother collects! I mean, we have a history, right? I really ➑stand for something. Or ... at least ... I used to.
I remember back when we were young. You brought me home, ➒gazed lovingly at my cup-shaped body, polished my ➓brass with a cloth. You even examined where my cup ⓫met my wooden base to make sure they were firmly ⓬fastened. You were so ⓭caring back then.
Then you ran your fingers across the plate ⓮engraved with your name and put me ... here, high up on this shelf. It was a place of honor. A place of love.
I know there have been others: the ribbons, the medals. But when you brought me home from that ⓯track-and-field meet, I was special. You would look at me for hours, and I would remind you that you were a winner! You’d won me ... And ⓰won my heart! Gosh, we were great together. You were the fastest runner, and I was the tallest and shiniest prize in your collection.
Now I’m just the dustiest.
Wait ... is that ... is that the photo album? Our photo album? Oh! You’re looking at me! You do remember! Aaah ...

私たちが若かった頃のことを思い出すわ。あなたは私を家に連れて来ると、いとおしげに私のカップ型の体を眺めて、真鍮（しんちゅう）の部分を布で磨いてくれたのよ。カップの部分が木の台に接しているところを調べて、しっかり固定されているか確かめることさえしてくれたわ。あの頃は、あんなに気遣ってくれたのよね。それから、あなたの名前が彫られているプレートを指でなでて、私を・・・ここに、この高い棚に置いたのよ。ここは、名誉ある場所。愛の場所なの。
ほかにもいたのは知ってるわ。リボンやメダルたちでしょう。でもあの陸上競技会から家に連れて来てくれたとき、私は特別だったのよね。あなたは何時間も私を見つめて、私はあなたが勝者だという記念だったわ！あなたは私を勝ち取って・・・私の心を奪ったのよ！ああ、私たち2人はすてきなコンビだったわ。あなたは最速のランナーで、私はあなたが集めた賞の中でひときわ高く、いちばん輝いていたの。
