新しく始まった連載「アルク・ネイティブスタッフのSmall Talk」では、アルクのカナダ人スタッフMargaret Stalkerが、日々のあれこれを英語エッセイで語ります。

さて、先月開催されたワールド・ベースボール・クラシック（WBC）の試合は、決勝戦まで大興奮でしたね。特に決勝の最後、日本代表の大谷翔平投手とアメリカ代表マイク・トラウト選手の対決は、手に汗握る瞬間でした。

ここからは、マーガレットの英語とその和訳で、「野球」に関するちょっとした話をお楽しみください！

Not As Loved Everywhere

Japanese baseball fans erupted with happiness as Shohei Ohtani struck out Mike Trout in the top of the ninth inning in the final of the 2023 World Baseball Classic. It was a thrilling end to a thrilling tournament.

Baseball is one of the most loved sports in Japan and has become an integral part of the country’s culture. Do other countries have a similar appreciation of the game? When you ask a British guy what he thinks of baseball, you are likely to receive a dismissive look. “Rounders,” he might say, referring to a U.K. schoolgirls’ game. In fact, this year’s tournament was the first time ever that Britain had even qualified for the WBC. It’s just not their game.

どこでも愛されているわけではない

2023年ワールド・ベースボール・クラシックの決勝戦で、大谷翔平が9回表にマイク・トラウトを三振させた瞬間、日本の野球ファンは歓喜に沸きました。素晴らしいトーナメントの素晴らしい終わり方でしたね。

野球は日本で最も愛されるスポーツの1つで、日本の文化に欠かせないものとなっています。他の国々でもこのスポーツを同様に高く評価しているのでしょうか？イギリス人に野球をどう思うかと聞くと、嫌な顔をされることが多いかも。「ラウンダーズ」と言って、イギリスの女子学生の遊びを引き合いに出すかもしれません。実際、今年の大会は、イギリスが初めてWBCへの出場権を獲得した大会でした。彼らにとって、野球は彼らのスポーツではないんです。

A Canadian Invention?

In contrast, most Canadians love the sport. It has even been claimed that the “great American pastime” was actually invented in Canada! It turns out that the first recorded and detailed account of the sport being played in North America was of a game in Beachville, Ontario, on June 4, 1838. It was written about in the pages of Sporting Life magazine. But, of course, the exact origins of baseball are impossible to pin down as there have been so many versions of the game throughout history.

野球はカナダ生まれ？

対照的に、カナダ人の多くはこのスポーツが大好きです。「アメリカの一大娯楽」である野球は、カナダで発明されたとさえいわれています！実際、北アメリカで初めて野球がプレーされたことが記録され、詳しく説明されているのは、1838年6月4日にオンタリオ州ビーチビルで行われた試合です。「Sporting Life」誌に掲載されました。しかし、もちろん、歴史を通じて実にさまざまな試合が存在しているため、野球の正確な起源を特定することは不可能です。

A Diplomatic Scandal

Older Canadians will remember the “flag flap” of the 1992 World Series. Before the Toronto Blue Jays made history by becoming the first non-American team to win the Series that year – and the next year as well – Canadian fans saw a big mistake being made in the pregame of Game 2. A U.S. Marine color guard was carrying their beloved flag upside down! Luckily, this is something that could never happen with the Japanese flag!

野球で外交問題

年配のカナダ人であれば、1992年のワールドシリーズの「国旗逆さま事件」 を覚えているでしょう。トロント・ブルージェイズがその年、アメリカ以外のチームとして初めてワールドシリーズを制し（翌年も連覇しました）、歴史に名を刻む前の第2戦の試合前に、カナダのファンはとんでもないミスを目撃しました！彼らの愛する国旗を、アメリカ海兵隊の旗手が逆さまに持っていたです。幸いなことに、これは日本の旗では絶対に起こり得ないことですね！

上記で紹介したエッセイに関連する用語を解説します。 本文には出てきていませんが、普段よく使われる野球用語も紹介します。

ninth inning

A lot of Americans often use baseball-related idioms in their daily lives. The expression “ninth inning” means that a process is nearing the end. If you hear a colleague say, “We are in the bottom of the ninth!” it means you really should be worried. That person is saying that the situation is desperate and you don’t have much time left to accomplish something.

多くのアメリカ人が、日常生活で野球にまつわる慣用句をよく使っています。ninth inningという表現は、あるプロセスが終わりに近づいていることを意味します。もし同僚が「9回裏だ！」と言うのを聞いたら、本当に心配した方がいいということです。その人は、状況が絶望的で、何かを成し遂げるための時間があまり残されていないと言っているのです。

flap

“Flap” used in the sense of a controversy or panic is most often used in newspaper headlines and stories rather than in conversation. It works very well with the word “flags” because flags do flap in the wind.

論争やパニックの意味で使われるflapという言葉は、会話よりもむしろ新聞の見出しや記事で使われることがほとんどです。旗は風になびくので、flagsという語と非常に相性がいいのです。

in the ballpark

A very commonly used term is “in the ballpark,” meaning within an acceptable range. “Forget that buyer. Their offer is not even in the ballpark!” And if someone ever tells you that you have hit something “out of the ballpark,” you can feel very proud of yourself. It means you have done an extremely good job or achieved something extraordinary.

非常によく使われる言葉にin the ballparkがありますが、それは何かが許容範囲内であることを意味します。「あのバイヤーのことは忘れろ。彼らの提案は問題外だ！」。また、もし誰かがあなたに、何かを「ボールパークの外に」打ち出した、と言ったら、自分を誇りに思ってよいと思います。それは、あなたが非常に良い仕事をしたとか、何か特別なことを成し遂げたという意味なのです。
