ネイティブ講師の先生に「こんなとき英語でなんて言う？」と聞いてみました。今回のテーマは「忙しい」。“busy”を使いがちですが、それ以外の表現を学んでみましょう。

解答例

「忙しい」にはいろいろな表現がありますが、ネイティブ講師の先生によると、こんな表現があります。

I have a lot on my plate right now.

“I have a lot on my plate”は、直訳すると「私の皿の上に食べ物がたくさんのっている」ですが、比喩表現で「やらなければならないことがたくさんある」という意味です。「いろいろ抱えているので忙しい」ということを伝えるニュアンスになります。使えると差が付くネイティブらしいフレーズです。

「忙しい」には、上で紹介したもの以外にもいろいろな表現がありますので、併せてご紹介。ネイティブ講師の先生が教えてくれました 。

Tamara先生

• I have a lot on my mind.
• I’m having a full plate.
• I’ve got my hands full.

“we have a lot on our plate”や“we’re having a full plate”は忙しいときや、何かで頭がいっぱいのときに使います。“we have a lot on our mind”や“our hands are full”という言い方もできます。（Tamara先生）

原文：When we are busy and preoccupied, we say that we have “a lot on our plate” or that we’re having “a full plate”. Similarly, we can say that we have “a lot on our mind” or that our “hands” are full.

Steffi先生

• I’m swamped.
• I’m buried with work.
• I’ve got a lot going on right now.

“I’m swamped”は「やることがたくさんあって、ほかのことは何も考えられない」という意味です。“I’m buried with work”も同じ意味ですが、仕事の量が多いことを強調した表現です。（Steffi先生）

原文：“I’m swamped” means I have so much to do I can’t think of anything else. “I’m buried with work” means the same, but emphasizes how much work there is to do.

Melissa先生

• I’m tied up at the moment.
• I have a lot going on right now.

“I’m tied up”は「スケジュールに縛られている（tied up）ので忙しい」という意味です。“I have a lot going on right now”と“I have a lot on my plate”は同じ意味です。（Melissa先生）

原文：“I’m tied up” means they are busy. スケジュールに縛れてる (tied up). “I have a lot going on right now” and “I have a lot on my plate” have the same meaning.

Tracy先生

• I am swamped.
• I’m overextended.
• I’ve got too much going on.

“I am swamped”と“I’m overextended”は（やるべきことが溜まり）、悩まされていたり、気が遠くなっている気持ちを伝える表現です。“I’ve got too much going on”も同じ意味ですが、より丁寧な表現です。（Tracy先生）

原文：“I am swamped,” “I’m overextended” can be used to express feelings of being overburdened or overwhelmed. “I’ve got too much going on” expresses the same, but is a polite way saying it.

まとめ

友人からの誘いを断る場合、今回の例文のように “I have a lot on my plate”だけでもいいですが、日本人の感覚からすると、なるべく相手を傷つけないように、やんわりと断りたくなってしまいますよね。そんなときは、もう一言二言付け足すといいですよ。

今とても忙しくて、時間がとれないな。後で連絡してもいい？

I’d love to go, but I’m buried with work lately.
ぜひ行きたいんだけど、最近仕事が忙しくて。
