世界にはさまざまな祝日、伝統行事やイベントが数多くありますが、その実態は知らない人が多いのでは？各国の文化を楽しみながら学んでいきましょう！今回は、5月にスペイン、コルドバで開催される「パティオ祭り」を紹介します。

Patio Festival：パティオ祭り

スペイン、アンダルシア州コルドバの世界遺産――「Fiesta de los Patios(Patio Festival)：パティオ祭り」をご存じですか？ コルドバの伝統的な家には「patio（パティオ：中庭）」があり、建物や庭が色とりどりの美しい花で飾られています。

スペインの初夏、5月初旬に2週間にわたって開催される「パティオ祭り」の期間は、普段は外部の人が中に入って見ることのできないその中庭が一般公開され、観光客も自由に見学できます。毎年多くの人が訪れるイベントで、5月のスペインに行く機会があればぜひ足を運んでみてはいかがでしょうか。

今回は「パティオ祭り」について、英語でチェックしてみましょう！

A few years ago, I took my mother to (1)Barcelona for her 70th birthday that May. One of my favorite memories of that trip was walking around the beautiful gardens with her. If we’d traveled further southwest, we could have visited (2)Cordoba, a city famous for its (3) privately owned gardens with (4)stunning flowers on display during the (5)annual “(6)Fiesta de los Patios” ([7]Courtyard Festival, or Patio Festival).

The festival begins with a parade through the city. There are decorated (8)floats, walking bands and people wearing traditional clothes of the region. The local people on the floats throw (9)carnations to the (10)spectators, who then throw the flowers back, so the air is filled with flying flowers! This event is called the “Battle of the Flowers.”

Traditional homes in Cordoba were built around “patios,” or outdoor courtyards with a gate opening out onto the street. It is very (11) humid in Cordoba, so residents filled their courtyards with flowers and (12)water features to try to keep cool. (13) Eventually, these courtyards became very beautifully decorated, and once a year, the residents would open the gates and welcome people in to enjoy the beautiful flowers and decorations.

Exactly 100 years ago, Cordoba city launched its first patio competition, with (14)financial incentives to encourage this tradition, and it has since become a huge tourist (15)attraction, with as many as 2 million people visiting the patios each year.

私は数年前、母の70歳の誕生日を祝うため、母を5月のバルセロナに連れて行きました。その旅行の最高の思い出の一つは、母と一緒に美しい庭を歩き回ったことです。もう少し南西に足を延ばせばコルドバへ行けたのですが、その街は年に1度行われる「フィエスタ・デ・ロス・パティオス（中庭祭りまたはパティオ祭り）」の期間中、私有の庭に驚くほど美しい花が飾られることで有名です。

その祭りは、市内を巡るパレードから始まります。装飾された山車、楽団やその地方の民族衣装を身に着けた人々が行進します。山車に乗っている地元の人々が観客にカーネーションを投げると、今度は観客がその花を投げ返すため、空中は飛び交う花でいっぱいになります！このイベントは「花の戦い」と呼ばれています。

コルドバの伝統的な家は、「パティオ」―通りに面して開いている門が付いた屋外の中庭―の周りに建てられました。コルドバはとても湿度が高く、それを涼しくしようとして住人は中庭を花や噴水でいっぱいにしました。やがてこれらの中庭はとても美しく飾られるようになり、年に1度、住人は門を開けて人々を迎え入れ、美しい花や装飾を楽しんでもらったのです。

ちょうど100年前、コルドバ市はこの伝統を奨励するため報奨金付きで1回目のパティオコンテストを開催しました。それ以来、毎年200万人もの人々がパティオを訪れる大人気の観光名所となりました。
