今年、創刊50周年を迎える『ENGLISH JOURNAL』（EJ）。創刊当時から、ハリウッドスターや世界的なアーティスト、文化人の方々のインタビューを掲載してきました。そこには長い年月がたっても色あせない言葉があふれています。その中から今回は、時代が反映されている言葉や心に残る言葉をピックアップしてご紹介します。

1990年代

インターネットの台頭により、コミュニケーション、ビジネス、エンタメの新時代が到来。史上初めて戦争（湾岸戦争）がテレビで生放送され、平和について考えるきっかけとなりました。情報の流れは国境を越え、「グローバル」という言葉が使われ始めたのもこの時代です。

Our plan will bring the deficit down dramatically over the next four years. But, unless we also tackle the health care crisis this year, the deficits will start going up after that no matter what we do. When we first started up with the group it was pretty early days of the rock ‘n’ roll industry, which has now grown to be quite a big giant. Consequently , we never really had places to rehearse. So little practical things like that would ’ve been a great benefit to us if LIPA had been in existence.

僕たちがグループとして活動し始めた頃というのは、ロック業界が誕生したばかりの時期で、今みたいにピッグ・ビジネスに成長していたわけではありませんでした。そういうわけだから、練習する場所なんか、全然なかった。リハーサル場所といった小さな実際的なことも、もしLIPA *1 みたいなものが存在していれば、当時の僕らは非常に助かったでしょう。
