「関係詞（関係代名詞・関係副詞）」を頭では分かっていても、実際に使いこなすのは難しいものです。「習うより慣れろ」ということで、関係詞にまつわる練習問題に挑戦してみましょう！実際の問題を解いて学ぶことで、さまざまなパターンに合わせた使い分けができるようになるはずです。

列車の脱線現場を調べている当局は、事故が起きた原因を特定できていない。

解説

当局がいまだに特定しきれないのは、事故が起きた「原因（the reason）」だと考えるのがよいでしょう。ここではthe reasonという先行詞が省略されているため、whyが入ります。先行詞が省略されているときは、話の流れから何を入れるべきか考えることも必要です。

解説

解説

一見すると、空所にItを入れてIt is sure...としてもおかしくない感じがしますが、文の後半にis its extended battery lifeという述部があるので、これではいけません。先行詞を含むwhatという関係代名詞を使って、「～なこと」とするのが正解です。

訳

送り状には荷物の中身と、各商品がどの国から輸入されたかが記載されている。

解説

the countryという先行詞に対して前置詞fromを補った上で説明を加えています。関係代名詞を使った「場所」の関係を強調する方法なのでwhichを選びましょう。仮に選択肢にthatがあったとしても、whichと違い前置詞と一緒に使うことができないので不適格であるということも知っておくとよいですね。

訳

先行詞last April（昨年の4月）がどんな月だったのかという「時」の関係を表しています。このような場合はwhenが当てはまります。

解説

the actors（俳優たち）という先行詞に対してはwhoかwhoseのどちらかを選べますが、whose plan（その俳優たちの計画）とつなげてしまうと関係詞節中に「動詞」がなくなってしまうので、これではいけません。planを名詞ではなく動詞の「予定を立てる」として考えれば、who plan「予定している俳優たち」という意味になりますね。

解説

パン屋は、従業員が共同経営者のように扱ってもらえる「場所」なのでwhereが正解です。whoseを使ってパン屋と従業員の「所有関係」を表すこともできますが、その場合はtheが不要でwhose employeesとなります。

訳

12月中に休暇を取りたい従業員は全員、11月5日までに上司に知らせる必要がある。

解説

先行詞any employee（いずれかの従業員）の後ろに付くことができるのはwhoだけです。関係代名詞whoはanyと組み合わせることで「～する人なら誰でも」という意味を表すことができます。先行詞を含んだwhoeverという関係代名詞で言い換えることも可能です。
