広島の観光名所やグルメのことを英語ではこう言います！

アルクが日本各地の魅力を日本語と英語で発信する連載、「アルクの勝手にお国自慢」今回は広島県。広島県は、中国山地と瀬戸内海に囲まれた、ほどよく発展して、ほどよく田舎な県です。そこそこ自慢はあるはずですが、県自ら「おしい！広島県」と自虐的なPRを展開したくらいアピール下手なので、この記事をきっかけに少しでも関心を持ってもらえたらうれしいです。

広島って聞いてみなさんは何をイメージされますか？ドスを持った角刈りのヤクザをイメージした人は「仁義なき戦い広島死闘篇」の見すぎです。私もあったことありませんし、まず出会わないので、一旦忘れてください。もう知ってるよ！と思うかもしれませんが、これからご案内する4つの情報だけでも覚えてもらえたらうれしいです！

１．厳島神社

厳島（通称：宮島）の沖合に建つ朱色で染められた社殿と鳥居は、潮が満ちると海の上に浮かんでいるように見えます。江戸時代から日本三景の一つとして日本人には知られていましたが、1996年に世界遺産として登録され、世界に誇る観光地の一つとなりました。

Itsukushima Shrine The shrine buildings and the torii gate, all painted in bright vermilion, stand in the inlet of Itsukushima Island (better known as Miyajima). They appear to be floating on the water when the tide is high. Since the Edo period , the shrine has been known as “one of the three most scenic spots in Japan,” and it was registered as a World Heritage Site in 1996, making it a world-class tourist destination.

２．原爆ドーム

原爆ドームは1945年8月6日に投下された原子爆弾の惨禍を今に伝える記念碑（被爆建造物）です。1996年世界遺産への登録されました。「核兵器による破壊の悲惨さ」を後世に伝えるべく、可能な限り、破壊された当時の状態が保たれています。

３．広島東洋カープ

日本のプロ野球・セントラルリーグに所属する球団です。戦後の復興期、広島県民の心のよりどころとして、なくてはならない存在でした。成績が振るわず、万年Bクラスと称されることもありましたが、2016年には25年ぶりのリーグ優勝を達成しました！

４．広島風お好み焼き

お好み焼きは、焼き方や具材が地域によって異なりますが、広島のお好み焼きは、小麦粉を水で溶いたものを薄く伸ばして焼き、その生地の上に野菜や肉などの具を重ねてひっくり返し、生地でふたをして「蒸し焼き」にするのが特徴です。

Hiroshima-Style OkonomiyakiThe recipes may vary from region to region , but the basics for making Hiroshima okonomiyaki are as follows . You cook the batter (the mixture of flour and water) in a thin circle, like a pancake, and then layer vegetables and pieces of meat on top of it. Then flip it over and gently press it to keep it together. Cook that side and then flip it over again.

OMOTENASHIフレーズ

Do you know why the shrine and the torii gate are situated on the water’s edge ? The whole island has long been considered a sacred place , so residents were initially prohibited from cutting down trees and tilling the soil. That’s why the shrine ended up being built where it is.
厳島神社の社殿と鳥居が海上にある理由をご存知ですか？古来、宮島は島全体がご神体として信仰の対象とされていました。木を切ったり、土を削ったりできなかったので、海上に建てられたと言われています。

Mount Misen on Miyajima has been worshipped since ancient times as a sacred place . The view from the top is just stunning. Though there’s a ropeway, you still need to walk for about 30 minutes to the mountain peak, so good walking shoes are recommended.
宮島にそびえる山・弥山も古くから信仰の対象として厚く保護されてきました。この弥山頂上から見る景色も格別です。途中までロープウェイで行けますが、降りてから３０分ほど歩くので、歩きやすい靴をお勧めします！

There’s a high-speed ferry that runs between Miyajima and a pier near the A-Bomb Dome , but it is a bit expensive. The ferry seems so fast when it is out on the sea waters, but its speed is much reduced while cruising the river. If the water is high enough, you can go out on the deck and take in the magnificent cityscape as you sail by !
少し値段はしますが、宮島から原爆ドームを結ぶ高速船があります。海では高速運行ですが、川を通航する間は、ゆったりと低速運航です。水位が十分にあれば、デッキに出られます。船から眺める街並みも楽しいですよ！

You cannot actually go inside the A-Bomb Dome , but you can have a look at it on Google Earth. It shows the dome ’s bare steel frame and collapsing brick walls. It’s worth checking out.
原爆ドームの中には、保護の観点から入ることが許されていませんが、グーグルアースの機能で内部を見ることができます。崩落したレンガやむき出しの鉄骨なども見れるので、お時間あればご覧ください。
