Renowned foreign researchers to conduct online classes as faculty at the University of Tokyo

On the 18th, the University of Tokyo decided on a basic policy of establishing a new system in the academic year of 2021 to appoint renowned researchers from overseas universities as faculty members under the name of “Global Fellows.” In addition to streaming classes online from overseas, such researchers will be able to participate in joint research. Even as the restrictions on travel to and from overseas continue due to the effects of the novel coronavirus, the university will create opportunities for students to come into contact with world-class education and research, and strengthen its international competitiveness.

The conditions for eligibility will be stipulated in the university’s regulations as “has outstanding academic or educational achievements and can contribute to the promotion of (University of Tokyo’s) global educational and research activities.” Each faculty or graduate school of the University of Tokyo will select people. It is also assumed that each faculty member can make use of their personal connections to invite cutting-edge researchers.

All education and research activities will be conducted online. The term and remuneration will vary depending on the individual’s contract. If the person is in charge of] classes, they will be required to take on at least one term out of four per year.

They will have the same authority to award credits and such as faculty members belonging to the University of Tokyo, and they can apply for public research funds. It has been trialed at the Graduate School of Economics since the academic year of 2020, with one researcher from the University of California and one from Northwestern University appointed. It is expected that the Graduate School of Engineering will ntroduce it soon.

東京大は18日、海外大学などの著名な研究者を「グローバルフェロー」の名称で教員として登用する制度を2021年度に新設する方針を固めた。海外からオンラインで授業を配信するほか、共同研究に参加できるようにする。新型コロナウイルスの影響で海外との往来制限が続くなかでも学生らが世界レベルの教育や研究に触れられる機会をつくり、国際競争力を強化する。

対象者の条件は内規で「学術上または教育上の顕著な業績を有し、（東大の）グローバルな教育研究活動の推進に貢献できる」と定める。東大の学部や研究科ごとに人選する。各教員の人脈を生かし、最先端の研究者を呼び込んでもらうことも想定する。

教育研究活動はすべてオンラインで実施する。任期や報酬は各人の契約で異なる。授業を受け持つ場合は年4回の学期（ターム）のうち1ターム以上を担うよう求める。

単位授与などの権限は東大に所属する教員と同等とし、公的研究費の申請もできる。20年度から経済学研究科で試行し、米国のカリフォルニア大とノースウエスタン大の研究者を1人ずつ登用している。工学研究科でも近く導入する見込みという。

ニュースのポイント

第1段落第1文のfaculty「教員陣」という意味で、大学や院で教える教員全体を表す言葉です。一人一人の教員を表す場合はfaculty memberという表現になります。staff、crew、audienceなどと同じ使われ方です。オンラインで授業を提供する以外にも、共同研究者として参加することも可能とのこと。第3文のthe restrictions on travel to and from overseasでは to and fromという海外への旅行も海外からの旅行もまとめてしまう表現が便利です。world-classは「世界レベル」のという意味ですね。

第2段落に登場するconditionは日本語の「コンディション」という意味以外に「条件」という意味でもよく使われる言葉。その後のeligibilityは「適格性」という意味ですが、形容詞のeligibleもbe eligible for～「～の資格がある」、be eligible to do「～する資格がある」という形でよく使われます。cutting-edgeは「最先端の」という意味で、似た意味のstate-of-the-artと共に頻繁に用いられる表現です。

第3段落のremunerationは「報酬」という意味ですが、給料を表す言葉はsalary（給料）、wage（賃金）、compensation（給与）などたくさんありますね。

第4段落第2文のwith one researcher from the University of California and one from Northwestern University appointedは便利な構造。one researcher from the University of California and one from Northwestern Universityまでがwithの目的語で、その後のappointedがその補語になっています。2名の研究者が任命された状態で試験運用が始まっているという意味ですね。
