Q. ローカライズについておしえてください

Kathryn Cwynar: We decided , I suppose , it’s easier to say what (1)localization isn’t than what it is, because I think a lot of people when they hear ? I mean , translation as well ? but localization, they have an image of: You have a sentence, and you pull out a dictionary, and then you replace the words one by one , and (2)there you go. And that’s really not what it is at all .

Tom Mills: Yeah, we’re not just (3)swapping the Japanese words for English ones. We’re looking at the Japanese content as a whole and thinking about how we can (4) convey these ideas (5)in a natural way for the (6)players. And because if they’re playing in English, they don’t sit there comparing the Japanese to the English and saying, like, “Ah, this is the same, this is the same.” They’re only seeing the English, so we wanna make the English as good as possible .

Kathryn: The (7)emotional impact of fiction is really important, and if what you’re doing is you’re swapping out Japanese words for English ones, you’re going to lose that and you’re going to lose the point of the work (8) as a whole , which is a lot more important than the exact words. So , that’s what we try to do ? is we try to take the meaning and make sure that the English players are getting the same experience that the Japanese players are getting, even if the words aren’t exactly the same.

(2)there you go はい、どうぞ (3)swap A for B AをB と交換する、AをB に置き換える ★ 後出のswap out A for B も同じ意味。 (4) convey ~(意思・情報)を伝える (5)in a natural way 自然な形で (6)player プレイヤー ★ゲームでプレイする(遊ぶ)人のこと。 (7)emotional impact 心理的効果 (8) as a whole 全体として

具体的に どんな 作業 を担当していますか?">Q. 具体的に どんな 作業 を担当していますか?

Kathryn: Pretty much any kind of text that is in the game has to be translated into English, so we work on all of that. In terms of our roles (1) specifically , I do work on a lot of those item names and attack names. And I actually discuss that with the Japanese side as well . It’s not just me looking at the Japanese and naming it; it’s me speaking with the people (2)coming up with the original names so that we have something that will work in all languages.

Tom: I think, um, games localisation’s a bit different these days, because in the past they’d make the whole game in Japanese and then they’d give it to a localisation team and just say, “There you go. Just translate it. Just swap out all of the Japanese text for English,” and (1)that was it. (2) Whereas now, a lot of games, they’re released in Japanese and English at the same time . So , we’re kind of working at the same pace as the Japanese developers. So , they’re writing their text and making the game, and we’re doing the translations at the same time . And then , it’s all released together. So , players around the world can experience the same game but in different languages (3) simultaneously . And they could even be playing together in the same teams and things like that. So , the schedule is kind of tough, but it does mean that people get to experience it at the same time instead of , like, in the past, when the Japanese version would (4) come out and then , maybe a year or two years later, it would be available in English. Now the process is much quicker, much more (5)streamlined.
