世界にはさまざまな祝日、伝統行事やイベントが数多くありますが、その実態は知らない人が多いのでは？各国の文化を楽しみながら学んでいきましょう！今回は、アメリカで毎年7月4日に祝われる「独立記念日」を紹介します。

7月4日――日本人にとってはある夏の一日にすぎないかもしれませんが、この日がアメリカにとってどれほど大切な日か知っていますか？
植民地からの 「独立記念日（Independence Day）」 は世界各国にありますが、アメリカでは1776年に 「アメリカ独立宣言（The Declaration of Independence）」 を署名した特別な日として、現在も盛大に祝われています。今回はアメリカの「独立記念日」について、英語でチェックしてみましょう！
Independence Day is a U.S. holiday celebrated on July 4 every year. It (1)commemorates the signing of (2)the Declaration of Independence in 1776, which (3)granted the nation’s people freedom from British (4)rule and began the forming of what is now known as the United States of America. Before 1776, the North American continent was (5)colonized by countries such as Spain, Portugal, France and Great Britain. These European countries had invaded the “(6)New World” and (7)established control over the (8)indigenous people (Native Americans) whom it is believed had been living there for at least 20,000 years.
The Europeans ruled North America for about 250 years before the Declaration of Independence was signed, uniting 13 British colonies who (9)came together to become a union of free and independent states. The declaration stated that all (10)men[sic] were equal, with the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. So, for many Americans, the Fourth of July is a day to celebrate the right to personal and political freedom. These people celebrate it with huge firework displays, exciting parades through towns, neighborhood barbecues, and special events that (11)aim to (12) bring everybody together.
But for some Americans, Independence Day is a more (13) thoughtful day, and one to (14) reflect upon the (15)concepts of (16) equality and freedom, especially in the (17) context of American history. Despite the Declaration of Independence, it has taken many years of (18)struggle for women, black people and (19)homosexuals to achieve a degree of equality and freedom in the United States. (20) Similarly , it took hundreds of years for the Native Americans to (21)reclaim the freedom that was originally theirs (22)in the first place . Many minority groups continue to fight for such rights today.
独立記念日は、毎年7月4日に祝われるアメリカの祝日です。それは1776年「アメリカ独立宣言」の署名を記念していて、その国の人々にイギリスによる統治からの自由を与え、現在はアメリカ合衆国として知られる国を形成し始めました。1776年まで北アメリカ大陸は、スペイン、ポルトガル、フランス、グレート・ブリテン（現在はイギリス）といった国々の統治下にありました。これらのヨーロッパの国々は「新世界」を侵攻し、少なくとも2万年はその地に住んでいたと考えられている原住民（アメリカ先住民）への支配を確立しました。
ヨーロッパ人は、独立宣言が署名される以前の約250年間、北アメリカを支配していました、自由で独立した州の連邦国となるために協力した、13のイギリス植民地が団結するのです。その宣言文は、すべての人は平等で、生存、自由、そして幸福の追求の権利があると述べました。そのため、多くのアメリカ人にとって7月4日は、個人的・政治的自由の権利を祝う日なのです。これらの人たちは、大きな花火大会、活気に満ちた街頭パレード、自宅周辺でのバーベキュー、そして皆を団結させるために行われる特別なイベントなどでそれを祝います。
ところが、一部のアメリカ人にとって、独立記念日はより感慨深い日であり、特にアメリカの歴史的背景における平等と自由という概念について思いを寄せる日です。独立宣言とはいえ、アメリカでは女性、黒人、そして同性愛者がある程度の平等と自由を獲得するために、何年もかけて奮闘してきました。同様に、アメリカ先住民がそもそも最初は自分たちのものであった自由を取り戻すのに、何百年もかかりました。現在も多くのマイノリティーの人たちが、このような権利を求めて闘い続けています。
