Can You Say "I'm Happy" in Japanese?
Sometimes you're excited. Sometimes you're upset. But how do you say it — naturally — in Japanese?
In this guide, you'll learn eight super common and powerful emotion words. These aren't textbook phrases — they're short, real, and used by native speakers in daily life.
Eight Emotion Words to Use Like a Native
1. 楽しい (Tanoshii)
This is awesome!
Use this when you're having fun or enjoying something.
2. 悲しい (Kanashii)
I’m sad.
Simple and direct. Perfect for when you're feeling blue.
3. 嬉しい (Ureshii)
I’m happy.
Say this with a big smile when something makes your day.
4. 辛い (Tsurai)
I’m struggling.
Used when something is physically or emotionally hard.
5. うらやましい (Urayamashii)
I’m envious/jealous.
Yep, there's a word for that in Japanese too.
6. 悔しい (Kuyashii)
I’m frustrated.
For when you almost did it — but didn’t. That burning feeling!
7. 誇らしい (Hokorashii)
I’m proud.
Expresses pride in yourself or someone else. In Japan, people often express pride when it comes to others, but not themselves. Bragging is seen as a bad thing.
8. むかつく (Mukatsuku)
I’m upset/annoyed.
A casual way to say something (or someone!) is getting on your nerves.
Quick Tip
These emotion words can often be said by themselves. No grammar, no full sentences — just say the word with the right tone and facial expression, and Japanese people will totally get you.
